Shlomi Aber returns to Ovum for the first time since 2013’s ‘Slack Tide’ with a brilliant new three-track EP.

Shlomi has long been an integral part of Ovum’s history, as well as the history of dance music itself. He runs his own Be As One label and is a constant innovator who brings depth and synth craft to techno. From his breakout release, ‘Freakside’ in 2007 to his critically acclaimed album ‘Chicago Days/Detroit Nights’, the Barcelona-based, Tel Aviv-born artist has released on all the scene’s best labels while laying down furious three-deck sets around the world. He sent these recent demos to Ovum head Josh Wink “and it was an easy decision to welcome our old friend back for this incredible new release.”

Opener ‘Rewired’ is a loopy techno cut with slowly tumbling chords that fall through space as sleek drums roll onwards. It’s a track with a grand sense of space that brings widescreen drama to the dance floor. The superb ‘Brickwall’ is a suspensory masterpiece with unresolved synth loops keeping you hanging above the mysterious techno beats. It’s brilliantly atmospheric as well as hypnotic. Last of all is ‘Dream To Be Drum’, the quickest and most mind-melting of the lot. With shades of Detroit techno’s finest soulful sounds, it’s a futuristic and tightly woven techno workout.

This EP marks a fantastic return to Ovum for Shlomi Aber.

Philipp Priebe closed the last year with his debut album ‘Apparent Calm Palms’ showing dreamy and minimalistic visions of deep house/tech house, however he’s ready again to delight the audience with some fresh and brand new stuff. ‘Entfernetre Räume’ is a small two track EP which features an intriguing and introspective vibe: it’s gloomy but catchy thanks to the drum and tribal percussions inserted into the instrumental. The whole sound is robust and fixed to a limited set of music gizmos, unfolding a less is more approach to the track creation and allowing the various song parts to convey positive sensations.

Legendary Neopolitan techno label Unrilis close out 2022 with compilation featuring Luigi Madonna, Markantonio, Roberto Capuano and Marco Conte.

For more than 15 years, Rino Cerrone’s Unrilis have been at the top of their game, pushing its rolling brand of techno from the Naples scene that has spawned the likes of Joseph Capriati, Luigi Madonna and Markantonio. Now closing out the year with their 100th release, they round up a world-renowned crew of artists from the label for a VA titled ‘Fingerprint’, serving as a reference point for their identity, sound and style throughout the years.

Napoli techno lynchpin Roberto Capuano opens the release with the aptly named ‘Climax’. Sequenced sirens are intertwined with tough beats before a mammoth breakdown showcases his mastery over suspense and release. Next up, LuigiMadonna provides pure, hedonistic techno power via ‘Fake Mirror’, a speedy, thumping rhythm fused with hypnotic arpeggios. Markantonio then throws ‘Bangers’ into the mix, a classic, analog-feeling track boasting catchy synth lines and a funky, retro dialogue snippet. Audiomatiques, now going by his given name Marco Conte, finishes things up with ‘People’ in which futuristic, warped vocals are offset by chants while distorted synths filter through sturdy kickdrums.

MASK unveil the final entry in its untitled release series.

Berlin-based label MASK records has become known for releasing a string of vinyl-only EP’s by unnamed producers which have seen the support of respected artists such as Jimpster, DJ Bone, Ben Sims, Santiago Salazar, Laurent Garnier, Ryan Elliot, Marcel Dettmann, and the Blessed Madonnaamongst others. Now, the tenth and final instalment of the series consists of an eclectic collection of techno and house cuts, all recorded on tape during an analog live session in the artist’s studio.

The A1 eases you into the record through glitchy textures, swelling synths and broken beats before the A2 gets you into a rapturous tracky groove offset by lo-fi vocals and dreamy pads. The A3 takes a darker turn through hypnotic drums and a droning bass, readying the listener for the B-Side which continues this raw energy.

The B1 picks up the pace with energetic drums and clean ride cymbals while the B2 incorporates floaty arps and a tantalising repeating vocal. ‘B3’ closes out the release with a retro 80s synth feel, putting a wrap on yet another incredible vinyl EP by this exciting underground label.

Following his well-received ‘Affirmative EP’ earlier this year, London’s Void Complet steps up on newly minted Duga Records with house gem ‘Hey Look I Know’.

‘Hey Look I Know’ is marked by chugging drums, hypnotic vocal loops and a rushy filtered pad throughout, occasionally broken up by whistling polyrhythms before piano stabs take centre stage. The release also comes with a mesmerising dark and dub version perfect for the late nights and the early mornings.

Chog Burley, aka Void Complet, follows up fellow co-founder Whipps’ inaugural release on Duga Records with ‘Hey Look I Know’. The label is the brainchild of Chog together with Paul Greenwood, also known as Logic Kid, and Michael Whipps who between them produce music across a wide spectrum.

Maceo Plex’s 2020 track ‘Nu World’ was Pete Tong’s ‘Essential New Tune’ when it first dropped, and now comes a Solomun remix that is sure to be just as big.

The original of ‘Nu World’ is a rousing single designed to sweep dancers off their feet. In Solomun’s hands, it becomes one of his signature melodic masterpieces. The Diynamic label founder is one of dance music’s most globally recognised stars. He has been immortalised in the legendary Grand Theft Auto video game, holds his own influential residency at Pacha in Ibiza and is on a near constant tour of the world’s biggest clubs and festivals where he leads the house scene from the front.

Reade Truth opens the 2023’s Basic Moves catalogue with an ‘Untitled’ two vinyl release under his moniker Fiction Life (according to Discogs it was used once in far 1996). All the tracks represent an encouraging manner to jam with drum machines, dirty instruments and raw sounds, getting as result a luscious and rich style which embraces mixtures of oldschool house and techno. This release also exposes the dedication for all the dj and producers who go into some serious music research, not affiliated to the most mainstream vibes.

William Arist starts the new year with a banger release to be out this week on Frenzy Recordings: his ‘Gultural’ EP bring back the listener to the roots of tribal techno, reissuing this very club oriented style with a contemporary but autenthic sound setup. We have little to add about the originals, they sound heavy and well produced, expecially in the low end; anyway the EP is completed with two interpretations made by Vil and Kenji Hina who increase the bpm speed and introduce some obscure and glamorous influences.
