klaus:elle label co-founders Juli Lee & Pazkal join forces for a superb split EP that comes with remixes from Mihai Popoviciu and Marc Lenz and explore a sweet spot between house and techno.

Teaming up is always a good idea and so proves here as each artist shows their respective skills. Juli Lee is known for a diverse sound that has taken her to labels like Hive Audio, while featuring as a resident at Zurich’s famous Klaus Club since 2019, and brings her knowledge of dance floor dynamics to the fore here.

Her track ‘Boss’ underlines her penchant for groovy sounds, driving percussion and crisp vocals. It’s a cut perfectly designed for outdoor events in the sun with its undulating rhythm and hypnotic leads. Remixer and Romanian favourite Mihai Popoviciu is an underground stalwart with credits on all the most influential labels and a faultless catalogue of stripped-back sounds. He flips ‘Boss’ into a stylish and dubbed-out cut with soul-drenched vocals and a cool and breezy groove.

Swiss artist Pazkal has risen through the local sonde to make his international mark in clubs from Moscow to London. His sounds come on the likes of Circus and Roush, and always brim with rich sound designs. His ‘Slippin Future’ is another classy dancefloor smash, as gloomy synths combine with a wild and untamed bassline and powerful kicks that will drive you through to morning. Then comes Marc Lenz, who has caused a stir with his own label Degree Records as well as top tunes on 8bit and Ohral. His widescreen remix is a melodic masterclass with starry keys up top and smooth drums rolling deep.

‘Deep Roots’ is a ravishing journey through lush, fantastical landscapes and paradisiacal coastlines. It is here you can find Gavinco’s soothing synths and expert organic rhythm. From the title track through to ‘Transmute’, the A-side slowly builds up in energy, playful brass and lo-fi vocal samples creating an irresistible vibe whilst keys trickle like streams through swung jazz grooves.

The salt in the air makes way for glimmering stars on the B-side of ‘Deep Roots’, picking up the pace in ‘Showdown Groove’ and ‘Inspirations’ but maintaining the serene atmosphere of the album. ‘Homage’ then closes out the record via intense, mind-melting melodics and emotional vocal harmonies, rounding off a stellar LP where each instrument lives, breathes and brims with feeling.

“This is a deep jazz house album that I made with various old electric guitars, acoustic drum kits, Rhode & Hammond keyboards. I love world music, so I wanted to have an international selection of genres for the tracks so they could sound like they originate from any part of the globe. I wanted the listener to reflect and feel more engaged in the music by adding a meaningful or inspirational speech or voice for each track that is integrated into the rhythm of the music.”Gavinco

Joe Newham aka Gavinco first emerged on Houseum on the ‘Four J’s’ compilation back in 2018. He quickly followed things up with the “Caravella’ and ‘Interflow’ EPs in the years after, with this year’s ‘Deep Roots’ now marking the Brighton artist’s third escapade on the label. Newham combines a myriad of production techniques associated with genres anywhere from Acid House through to Afro-Beat, incorporating each element carefully into his versatile discography, making him a crucial player in the smooth house scene that’s released on notable imprints like Shall Not Fade, Novaj as well as his own outlet Satta Records.

Founded in 2016, Houseum has entrenched itself as the leading platform for house music in all its forms. The channel is home to a vault of over 2000 tracks and a following of 384000 subscribers, showcasing quality music from both established and fresh-faced producers daily. Format: Digital
Release Date: 5th May 2023
Tracklist:
1. Tired Of Loving

Argentinian Jay De Lys becomes the third artist to release on Jamie Jones’ newly-minted Paradise Music imprint, unveiling two new tracks across his new EP ‘Tired Of Loving’.

Based in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires, Jay De Lys is a name that has been appearing more frequently across the globe following a breakout series of releases on the likes of Nic Fanciulli’s Saved, Lee Foss’ Repopulate Mars, Stefano Noferini’s Deeperfect and Chus & Ceballos’ Stereo Productions. With heavy support from artists such as Marco Carola, Loco Dice and Joseph Capriati, alongside appearances across Europe, North America and beyond, early May sees De Lys turn in a landmark release within his young and promising career as he joins Jamie Jones’ newly-launched Paradise Music for the release of ‘Tired Of Loving’.

“I was in Barcelona for my European tour with just my headphones when I started working on this EP. I felt that the simplicity of my studio setup gave me another perspective and workflow, making me go for more raw and organic stuff combined with my usual Latin, percussion-focused style. I’m so happy with the result. For me, these ‘Tired of Loving’ & ‘One Bad Bix’ tracks meant showcasing my disco/housey influences with a modern touch.” – Jay De Lys.

Opening the EP, title cut ‘Tired Of Loving’ is a rolling and vibrant production merging crisp rolling drums with a funky core bassline and soulful vocals to showcase a track built for the Paradise terrace. On the flip, ‘One Bad Bix’ again dives into a carefully woven web of intricate percussion grooves, before the silky smooth melodies emerge from deep within the mix alongside more hooky vocal samples to shape things up nicely.

Jacob Groening’s record label, Kamai Music, drops a new organic house EP from K2W0 which also features remixes by SAQIB, Lost Boy and Jacob Groening.

K2W0 is an emerging talent from London, UK who has been turning heads with exquisite releases on Magician On Duty, MONADA, KataHaifisch and Talpa Records. His style blends poignant melodies with trippy atmosphere and flowing percussion. He is a well-travelled DJ and producer whose music takes influence from the different cultures he has experienced.

SAQIB is an American artist from Brooklyn who has a stripped-back and techy sound with immersive atmosphere. He has featured his downtempo style on labels ranging from Sabo’s Sol Selectas to BLOND:ISH’s Abracadabra Music.

Lost Boy is a Canadian artist whose sound fuses dreamscape melodies and lush organic sounds with shuffling percussion rhythms to create downtempo house with uplifting atmosphere. His music takes influence from his Asian heritage and he has featured on record labels such as Bar 25, Kosa and Sol Selectas.

Jacob Groening is an internationally respected artist from Germany who regularly travels the world as a headline DJ. His eclectic sound ranges from downtempo electronic to melodic house and everything in between. He is also a talented producer who along with releasing via his own Kamai Music has also worked with Earthly Delights, The Gardens of Babylon, Cosmic Awakenings and 3000 Grad Records.

“Aint No Sunshine” is a jazz-inspired track which fuses a sensual saxophone sample with soulful vocals washed in psychedelic effects. Built upon an acid bassline and framework of upbeat percussion, it’s a forward-thinking piece of dance floor orientated music with timeless elements.

SAQIB’s indie dance remix of Aint No Sunshine adds a chunky new bassline and dramatic snare hits. Removing the saxophone, it focuses on the original’s vocals and a sparkling new melody synth.

Jacob Groening’s remix of Aint No Sunshine is a restructured version of the original with a stripped-back sound that removes the saxophone, which unfolds with a purposeful precision that transforms the track into a streamlined version that’s perfect for DJ use.

“Sometimes” has chopped-up guitar chords that fade in and out to create a lo-fi groove that’s accompanied by a fluttering saxophone, poignant piano chords and bluesy vocal phrases. The sequenced percussion creates a solid foundation that ties the parts together while filling the track with forward momentum.

Lost Boy’s remix of Sometimes is a refined version that pushes back the original’s guitar to create a deep atmosphere where the vocals have space to take centre stage. It’s a stripped-back version with the addition of an uplifting synth melody that’s introduced in the second half of this light and breezy remake.

Ana Rs’ ‘Take Me There EP’

Artist: Ana Rs
Title: Take Me There EP
Label: Symbolism
Cat. #: SYMDIGI029
Format: Digital
Release Date: 5th May 2023
Tracklist:
01 Abstract Mind
02 The Shadow Between Us
03 From The Brink
04 Take Me There
05 Wipe Out

Montenegro’s Ana Rs debuts on Ben Sims’ Symbolism imprint this April with a slamming five-track EP, ‘Take Me There’.

The warped, bit crushed and snaking discordance of ‘Abstract Mind’ puts the peak time boot in before the imposing bottom end, urgent filtered stabs, and a cavernous atmosphere of ‘The Shadow Between Us’ lends a dubbed-out feel to things.

The broken, bone-shaking rhythm of the title track keeps the intensity high but fresh, whilst the sleek, undulating tunneller ‘From The Brink’ irons things out nicely. Closing with ‘Wipe Out’, another cut that leans heavily on huge resonant bass, the ‘Take Me There’ EP is a superb label debut from an artist who knows how to deliver punchy, muscular techno with skill and precision.
