After acquiring the catalogue of legendary Canadian house label Definitive Recordings earlier in the year, Get Physical Music is proud to present a new various artists series that focuses on some of its most classic cuts. Definitive Classics #001 features newly remastered music from Blunted Dummies, John Acquaviva, Chuck Phulasole and Jetstream.

This cult Canadian label was founded by John Acquaviva, Richard Hawtin, and Karl Kowalski in 1992 as an embodiment of their vision for house music. “Not too hard, not too soft” was the mantra and it built up a fine body of talented artists who made a real impact on the global underground and helped to foment a unique identity for Definitive Recordings. John Acquaviva will continue to A&R for the label and work closely alongside the Get Physical team in this new era. The label’s signature sound is showcased here with the first fantastic EP in the new series.

First up is Shawn Caesar and Ty James aka Blunted Dummies’ ‘House For All’ which became an anthem soon after its 1993 release. It’s a John Acquaviva edit presented here and is a brilliant raw and deep cut with chunky drums offset by light-emitting chords and a hooky vocal sample that brings a playful touch.

Chuck Phulasole is the pseudonym of Toronto based soul & funk artist John James. He became a mainstay of the label with this house focused project and here his ‘Wanna Be With You’ sounds as good as ever. It’s a jazzed-up and loose-limbed house cut with plenty of US soul, dusty drums and a heart-wrenching vocal over a funky, knotted bassline that cannot fail to make a mark.

Last of all is Jetstream’s ‘Seriously’ which was the first-ever release on the label and the only ever tune that Karl E. Kowalski put out under the alias. It’s a superb one, though, that hits hard with driving grooves overlaid with smeared chords. The power of the drums is matched by loopy piano refrains that provide and irresistible emotional release.

This series shines a vital light on what has been a hugely influential label in the history of house music.

Deenara lands on connected with two moving new singles, one featuring vocalist Eribertho Cruz.

Deenara has spent years as a show director and resident of the legendary Kyiv club CHI by Decadence House and has taken her sounds to clubs all across Europe. She “builds bridges between her beauty and the outside world” and inspires people to be who they want to be with her music, which has come on labels like Sol Selectas and Monaberry.

Sublime opener ‘Soy Yo’ is a deep and spiritual house cut with authentic Afro-soul and vocals. The rich horns and humid synths bring the heat over rolling drums, perfect for outdoor dancing under a bright sun. For the first tune here, she works with Eribertho Cruz, an Ibiza-based vocalist and musician who has collaborated with Megablast and Sparrow & Barbossa, releasing on LuvLite Recordings, Madorasindahouse, Sony Music and more.

‘Quiet Wilderness’ then pairs things back to a more late-night Afro-house feel with jumbled drums and vocal chants in the background while deep piano chords and jazzy keys vie for attention. It’s richly layered and moving both physically and emotionally.

Deenara casts a magical spell here with a fine debut on connected.

Benjamin Philippe Zulauf’s record label Hummingbird by BPZ is a deep tech imprint that orientates around raw, stripped-back and atmospheric grooves.

The label’s new release is a four-track EP by Benjamin Philippe Zulauf which orientates around four timeless tracks with analogue production and smooth sound design.

Benjamin Philippe Zulauf was born in Switzerland, raised in the UK, but also spent a number of years living in Australia. He has also travelled a lot and experienced many different music cultures, all of which have left their mark on his sound.

Some of his main influences include the likes of Mike Shannon and DJ Qu, but has also been inspired by others ranging from Jeff Mills to DJ Sotofett.

Along with releases on his own imprint, Benjamin Philippe Zulauf’s music has been released via other record labels such as Claap Rec, Vekton Black and Fourier Transform. He is a skilled DJ that has played alongside artists ranging from Shonky to Hot Since 82, and his music has been supported in the sets of others such as Laurent Garnier, DJ Rolando, DJ Sprinkles, DJ Bone, Fred P and Âme.

“Le King Charbon” opens the release with shuffling hi-hats and crisp claps that form the framework for a rolling bassline, jazzy melodies and gliding pads inspired by the classic sound of Detroit.

“Subtly Vibing” is a chunky track with gritty percussion and an acid bassline forming a foundation for trippy vocal textures, moody pads and shimmering melodies.

“Exit Reality” is a murky track with submerged pads and raw percussion built around pitched tom drums, fizzing hi-hats and a mind-bending acid line.

“Honkytonks” close out the release with pitch-bent synths playing a sun-drenched chord progression that has upbeat vibes perfect for sunrise sessions. Its upbeat percussion rhythms and metallic atmospherics add to its feel-good ensemble.

DJ Pasta serves up four red-hot house originals on toucan sounds, alongside a Sam Ruffillo remix.

For the superb first track ‘Cadacara’ DJ Pasta collaborates with vocalist Foresta, cooking up lithe deep house with jazzy chords and golden pads over shuffling broken beats. It’s a vibrant cut, with a soulful vocal adding the vital finishing touches. ‘Barecocul’ is another live-sounding groove with elastic bass and loose rhythm layered up with rich percussion and playful hooks that are perfect for open-air dancing.

The excellent ‘Pasticciotto’ keeps the feel-good vibes alive with tropical xylophone-like sounds, sun-kissed synth leads and bristling beats. It’s organic, hip-swinging house before ‘Puddy’ is a little more stripped back and direct. The warm beats and smooth grooves are overlaid with more cosmic chords and star-gazing keys. Last of all, Toy Tonics team member Sam Ruffillo brings classy party-starting disco-house vibes to his remix of ‘Caracara’ with its big string stabs and pumping drums.

Italian beatmaker, producer and occasional singer DJ Pasta aka Davide Piva made his mark as indie pop royalty as part of the Amari and Fare Soldi projects but is now making moves on his own. He has a broad array of influences and always serves up charismatic sounds on the likes of Record Record, the Basement Disco and most often innovative New York imprint, toucan sounds.

This is a heartwarming EP of richly designed and expertly arranged sounds all primed and ready for the hotter months.

India Ivory has DJ’d in Miami, FL at Dante’s HiFI, the Vinyl Social Club and Technique Records. In 2021, she performed synthesizer showcases with Palacio Palace and Synth Battle Miami. Her releases have been featured on KSPC Radio’s ‘Synthdactyl Program, Kane FM Radio, Last Day Deaf blog and La Belle Musique.

With a storied history in DJing and producing, starting in Rio de Janeiro as a D&B selector before settling into London’s techno sphere, the Brazilian producer pens dark and dubby textures. Delivering releases on his own label, Liberta Records as well as the likes of Modularz, Mord and Token he has displayed his penchant for trippy and foreboding techno whilst encapsulating the energy and passion that have come to be synonymous with his style. A style that also permeates his DJ sets which he’s taken around the globe.

Bringing this sound to Blueprint, his ‘Sem Rumo’ EP features four driving techno cuts which drop on 23 June.

Sisko Electrofanatik’s record label Gain Records welcomes a dark and driving peak time techno release from Marbox, which also includes a remix by Mozzy Rekorder.

Marbox is an Italian artist from Turin whose style is a fusion of explosive percussion and menacing synth lines that create hard-hitting grooves. He is making his Gain Records debut following releases on respected techno imprints such as Odd Recordings, JAM, Codex, Reload and Riot.

Stepping up on remix duty, Mozzy Rekorder is a Gain Records regular who blends enthralling synth lines and high-velocity percussion to produce tracks that have unrelenting momentum. His tracks and remixes can also be found on other scene-leading record labels ranging from Terminal M to OFF Recordings.

“Unconventional” is first of the two originals and it opens the release with a monstrous kick drum, juddering high-end percussion and a hypnotic vocal sample, which lays the foundation for sweeping dystopian synths.

Mozzy Rekorder’s remix of Unconventional works in a pulsating bassline and acid synth line, which along with the original’s brutal percussion, creates a tantalising rework.

“Green Eyes Speaking” closes the release with fast-paced percussion rhythms and a thumping kick drum that’s overlaid with the ominous tones of spine-tingling synths. Its industrial undertones and stripped-back sound design deliver a ruthless energy.

Black Light Smoke shares through his forthcoming ‘Ghosts’ album an intriguing and personal way to interpret house music. The tracks are inspired by typical 90s/oldschool motifs and styles, which feature melancholic and introspective states of mind, conditions empowered by the kind of samples used: well sounding drum machine loops (hardware geeks will recognize them), a less is more approach to build the groove patterns that integrate well with other part of the tracks such as basslines, pads or synths. Scissor and Thread hosts another great composition, bearing an authentic witness of sound research and depart from the mainstream electronic music.

“I found my purpose and identity in New York’s scene. House music was the soundtrack to this transformative decade in my life. There were the iconic clubs like Cielo and Output, but also the golden era of after parties – there’s nothing as beautiful as that.
