X-Press 2 ‘Thee (LP)’

Artist: X-Press 2
Title: Thee (LP)
Label: Acid Jazz
Cat. #: AJXD734
Release Date: 13.10.2023

UK electronic titans X-Press 2 announce brand new album ‘Thee’ alongside the drop of their latest single ‘Zeven’.

‘Thee’ is the vital duo’s fifth LP release and the first on the label they signed to earlier this year. They have already dropped two singles from the album and now unveil another nine fresh cuts that continue their creative purple patch, following recent remixes for Gabriels and David Holmes. It comes after years of defining the sound of the underground with a mix of powerhouse club tracks and catchy songs, most famously their Ivor Novello Award-winning ‘Lazy ft David Byrne’. Whether crafting for the club, the radio, or the catwalk and brands like Givenchy, Rocky & Diesel continue to showcase the pioneering spirit that has been with them since the early 90s. ‘Thee’ is beefy, fad-free house music stripped back but full of flavour, emotional nuance and well-used vocal fragments.

Say Rocky & Diesel of this latest musical chapter – “We’re so excited to be releasing ‘Thee’ with Acid Jazz. It’s been a long time coming, and some of the tracks have been with us for around ten years now. So it’s fantastic to finally get them finished and pulled together with a bunch of new tunes to form an entirely new album.

The excellent ‘Moov’ kicks off this comprehensive sonic statement with a deep, pared-back house rhythm underpinned by signature fat bass. Deft vocal coos, subtle strings, and distant FX bring the detail that keeps you locked, while the new single ‘Zeven’ plays with a funky disco loop that teases throughout. It never resolves and will ensure natural dance floor rapture. ‘Phasing You Out’ then offers sweaty and steamy basement grooves with a tender vocal over powerful dusty drums.

The second single, ‘Muse’, is a more introverted and heartbroken sound and ‘Can I See The Love’ picks things up with supersized drums and smoke-filled dance floor intensity. ‘The Rain’ veers into techno with twisted acid lines spraying about amongst church-like chords and dense percussion. After the stomping tribal energy of the first single ‘You Know (Everybody)’ comes the zoned-out, post-rush house of ‘Reach For Me’ and more elastic rhythms of ‘Cope’. ‘Bloom’ has freewheeling melodies that allow the floor to cut loose, and ‘Werq’ layers up undulating synths and earworm leads into expressive and storytelling house for the back room.

‘Thee’ proves that X-Press 2 once again shuns the legacy act status and continues innovating at the electronic underground’s sharp end.

Luke Slater & Dubfire team up for the first time with ‘The Dissent’ EP on Mote-Evolver

‘The Dissent’ by Luke Slater & Dubfire opens up with hypnotic, droning sequences and bubbling atmospheres, looming synthlines firmly backed by relentless organic rhythm. Rolling and dubby, this collaborative three-tracker follows up Slater and Ø [Phase]’s recent Roog Unit release on the label and continues with boundless layers of interwoven, mind-warping techno sounds key to an imprint housing scene legends such as Rene Wise, Steve Rachmad, The Lady Machine and many more.

Thanks to his fresh house sound, New York resident Serge Devant has turned the heads of tastemakers like Jamie Jones and Damian Lazarus for several years. A regular on Crosstown Rebels dating back to his label debut in 2015, dropping a string of EPs on the label since, he arrives in fine form once again as he unveils his latest single.

“Happy to open the floodgates from pandemic archives. ‘A Little Bit Of Love’ is the first out of the bunch of releases to follow. I started working on this in late 2020 and have been testing and getting this one right for quite some time. It’s finally ready for the dance floors; I hope you enjoy this uplifting vocal with a good message”.Serge Devant.

His brilliant ‘A Little Bit Of Love’ is an inventive rhythm that soon sweeps you up with its wavy beats and slick hits. Gorgeous chords are draped over it next to steamy vocals to ensure a truly emotive dance floor trip, while the dub version strips out the lead vocal to lay the focus on the remaining musical elements.

The remix comes from Jonny White, aka pioneering underground artist and No. 19 Music boss Art Department, and fellow Canadian talent MDL CHLD. They flip the production into seven minutes of emotionally intense house music with muted acid lines undulating throughout the mix, while immense percussive energy and lush cosmic keys make for a fulsome dancefloor rush.

Over the years, his releases have explored every facet of house and tech, while the man himself has played every major club and festival in the world. This is Fanciulli‘s third outing on Rekids after 12″s in 2019 and 2020, and it might be his best yet.

“Really excited to get this EP out on Rekids. Been testing and working on this record for a couple of years and happy to see it finally get released through one of my favourite labels.” – Nic Fanciulli

The stylish and seductive sounds of ‘On My Mind’ open up with loopy and catchy vocals, disco-tinged house beats and plenty of feel-good energy. The funky basslines and innovative samples make this a fun, full flavour and heartwarming groove that is sure to get crowds locked in and hands in the air. The brilliant ‘U Gotta’ is another track steeped in classic references but with a modern twist. It builds in careful layers that tease and please with sustained strings and low, grinding bass offset by the diva vocals and atmospheric crowd noise. This time the three tracker ‘Düsseldorf EP’ reveals a nice mixture of driving techno with dub techno, showing a calm and thoughtful side of the artist. In fact, aside the slower bpm speed of the tracks, the music doesn’t share tension and mind-boggling instrumentals, instead a late night mentalism prevails in the upshot, thanks to the use of cozy and organic sounds.
