Hoj ‘You Are A Wonder EP’

Artist: Hoj
Title: You Are A Wonder EP
Label: Tale + Tone
Cat. #: TnT024
Release Date: 14th August 2020
Tracklist:
1. Sweet Verse
2. You Are a Wonder
3. Feel That
4. Awake My Soul
5. You Are A Wonder (Newman (I Love) remix)

Hoj drops the ‘You Are A Wonder’ EP on his and Lee Burridge’s Tale + Tone imprint this August.

The EP, which takes in 5 tracks of groove driven, melodic house from the Iranian-born, California-based DJ is Hoj’s full EP debut for the imprint. He started Tale + Tone with Burridge in 2017, after forging a friendship through his residency for the British DJ’s All Day I Dream parties. This release is essentially a love letter to the dance music community, to all the friends, dancefloor family and supporters that have made things so special for Hoj over the years, and are now so sorely missed in the current times. Across the EP live drum samples and smooth basslines create a warm, cosseting bedrock for Hoj’s clear love of spaced out, ethereal atmospherics and leads that drift from organic to synthetic and back seamlessly.

Whether it’s the spaced out funk of opener ’Sweet Verse’, the fluttering, heady vibes of the title track or ‘Feel that’, or the subtle ebb and flow of ‘Awake My Soul’, ‘You Are A Wonder’ sees Hoj striking the perfect balance between dancefloor heft and engaging musicality. Closing out the EP, fellow All Day I Dream artist Newman turns in an undulating, epic interpretation of ‘You Are Wonder’.

Mike Brillstein, known to many as Thee Mike B, has been a kingpin in the LA club scene since the late 90s, and over a decade later his respect for the underground and others’ respect for him has not dwindled. Having worked with names like Jesse Rose, Switch, Diplo, and Oliver Dollar, it’s no surprise that Mike has a deep understanding of house and the underground. The early success of his work with Jesse Rose on “Shuffle The Paper” and “Good Wife” solidified Mike’s place in the underground house world, and with that, Brillstein was born. Now finding his feet with releases across Robsoul and HotBoi, he now returns to Australian label Refuge Recordings following releases from Oliver Dollar, Demuir, Junior Sanchez, Christian Nielsen, Filta Freqz, Sondrio, Jason Hodges, Scan 7, Crackazat, Loz Goddard, Jerk Boy and more.

‘Brassy Shadowz’ is a low slung, jazz infused track that lays focus on a luscious sax, stabbing melodies and revolving drums that keep the energy flowing. Formerly one half of Crookers, BOT known for releases on Dirtybird and Food Music delivers an uplifting house gem featuring soulful grooves, vibrant percussion and shimmering bass rolls that pulsate throughout.

Based in Sydney, and featuring across the city’s nightlife scene including at internationally renowned events series S.A.S.H., DJ and producer Cessy is an artist on the rise. With productions supported by the likes of Prunk, Rich NxT, Toman and Rossi to name just a few, late July welcomes a debut appearance on Amsterdam’s No Art as label heads ANOTR welcome him to deliver three original in the form of his ‘Take A Ride’ EP, whilst German favourite Sidney Charles also makes his label debut as he remixes the title cut.

PH44RMX ARTWORK

Erol Alkan ‘Sub Conscious’

Artist: Erol Alkan
Title : Sub Conscious
Remixer: Manfredas
Label: Phantasy Sound
Cat. #: PH44RMX
Format: Vinyl & Digital
Release Date: 24th July 2020
Tracklist:
A1 Sub Conscious
B1 Sub Conscious (Manfredas Remix)
B2 Sub Conscious (Manfredas Stream Of Consciousness)

Originally written and produced as the centrepiece to his 2014 FabricLive compilation, Erol Alkan’s ‘Sub Conscious’ arrives on 12” vinyl and to streaming platforms for the first time, accompanied by two charismatic remixes from Manfredas.

Shimmering and undulating, the original cut of ‘Sub Conscious’ was designed with Fabric’s cavernous main room in mind, taking full advantage of any finely-tuned soundsystem with a patient, rhythmic trip. Remastered here, the track evolves out of hazy darkness towards halcyon euphoria in a uniquely Alkan style.

Resident at Opium Club in Vilnius, cult DJ and producer Manfredas provides two hugely creative and alternative takes on ‘Sub Conscious’. The first works hallucinatory magic with a supple bassline and much of Alkan’s original stretched and repurposed around vampish oscillations and a westward vocal sample.

On the contrary, the ‘Stream Of Consciousness’ mix sees Manfredas pitch down and strum the bones of ‘Sub Conscious’, unexpectedly delivering a lovingly lethargic, bottom-heavy jam that’s pure dubside pleasure.

Yant ‘Hydro EP’

Artist: Yant
Title: Hydro EP
Cat. #.: BAXN005
Label: Blackaxon
Release date: 31 July, 2020
Format: Digital / Vinyl

Rising talent Yant delivers a quintuplet of aces for his second outing on Jay Clarke’s Blackaxon imprint.

We got the first taste of Yant aka Andrew Tomlinson’s production prowess with the transcendent ‘Cosmic Borders’ EP in late 2018. Clarke had originally planned to keep Blackaxon purely as an outlet for his studio creations, but the quality of Yant’s work convinced him otherwise.

The Hydro EP is an iridescent expression of Yant’s musical sensibilities. ‘Hydro 1’ provides driving rhythms from the off, before a heady concoction of synths and a lead siren drive the production home. ‘Hydro 2’ is a dark pumper, reminiscent of earlier Blackaxon releases. It builds gradually, heavy on mood, before a propulsion of drums raises the energy to another level. A highlight of Clarke’s set going back months, ‘Hydro 3’ is a delicious synapse-searer, marked by swirling synths and Yant’s trademark groove. ‘Hydro 4’ is a textured, low-slung chugger, imbued with thrashing dancefloor attitude and a glint of euphoria.

“I’m really happy to have Yant back on the label for his second release. He is such an amazing, fresh, and exciting producer and always delivers quality tracks! With this EP I can hear his inspiration from the likes of DVS1, Luke Slater, and ø[Phase] in his productions, all while having his own spin. Hydro #3 has been my secret weapon for some time now, it’s a proper killer track and I’m pleased that we can now share this with the techno community.”Jay Clarke

Savvas Georgiadis a.k.a. DJ Savage returns in the scene with a bunch of productions which, as suggested by the EP title, were made during the 2000-2002, years where techno was also interpreted with high bpms and a rave oriented attitude, in order to burn the hottest dancefloors all around. Nowadays it could be functional to revitalize this kind of sound, because the contemporary techno trends bring back to life oldschool influences, expecially the ones with high speeds and banging sounds.

Cat: NWR020

The title track reveals to be a special combination of dark techno with bright melodies, there the peculiar pad and the main melody create a contrasting vibe that arouses an intricate feeling; while ‘Agra’ detaches from the obscure sonorities, with instrumentals that going through a positive and glittering sound setup: in this production the main game is done again by a smooth pad and a simple chord that plays a catchy melody.
Both the remixers opt for a cluster vision of techno, elevating the dark potential of the originals.
