Artist: Nepotek Title : It’s Me Label: Plus Future Records Cat. #: PFR003 Format: Digital Release Date: 25th September 2020 Tracklist: 01 Nepotek – It’s Me (Basic Beauty Mix) 02 Nepotek – It’s Me (Paul Johnson’s Jack Nation Remix) 03 Nepotek – It’s Me (Peter Pixzel Remix) 04 Nepotek – It’s Me (Alexi Delano Remix) 05 Nepotek – It’s Me (Meitei Remix) 06 Nepotek – It’s Me (Twisted Deep Tech Mix)
Keeping up momentum following two well-received releases, Plus Future Records label owner and producer Nepotek drops ‘It’s Me’, with a wide range of quality remixes from Paul Johnson, Peter Pixzel, Alexi Delano, and Meitei.
‘It’s Me’ sees Nepotek utilise crunchy, hypnotic drums amongst piano licks, murky pads and vocal chops to form a deep and hazy vibe. Next, a remix from Chicago’s Paul Johnson, renowned for early works on legendary labels such as Peacefrog and Dance Mania. Paul’s decades of experience come into their own, and by adding an addictive groove, light synth work, and extra vocal chants, maximising the track for peak time club impact.
Fabric regular and WetYourSelf! co-founder Peter Pixzel’s version follows suit in fine style, flipping the track into a trippy, heads-down affair, while Visionquest and alphahouse affiliate Alexi Delano transforms the track into a shimmering downtempo delight complete with muted jazzy tones and light, shuffling percussion, a departure from the minimal sound he’s become known for over the years.
In a similar fashion, Japan’s Meitei gives ‘It’s Me’ the ambient treatment, with a slow burning piano motif evolving alongside the warmth of crackling, binaural atmospheres, reminiscent of his Pitchfork approved album from last year. Rounding off the release is an alternate take on the original from Nepotek himself, with the addition of an acid bassline weaving through, this mix mangles elements of the original into a truly twisted alternative.
Artist: DJ 3000 Title: Werkin EP Label: Motech Records Cat. #: MT138 Format: Digital Download / Streaming Release Date: 30 October 2020 Tracklist: 1. Werkin 2. Without Fear
Hot on the heels and imminent success of DJ 3000’s impressive ‘Don’t Stop EP’, comes ‘Werkin EP’ [MT 138]. DJ 3000’s second EP of the year drops again on his own imprint, Motech Records. This second EP is a two-track affair, and like his ‘Don’t Stop EP’ was produced during the middle of the Covid-19 lockdown.
Motech founder and artist DJ 3000 (aka Franki Juncaj) says, “loads of ideas came to me and like lightning in a bottle you gotta capture it.” The title track, ‘Werkin’ is a continuation of the soundscapes explored with his critically acclaimed track ‘Don’t Stop’. Crisp hitting 909’s along with analogue chords and droning vocal chop give ‘Werkin’ a real old-skool authenticity. DJ 3000 explains, “my ideas for both ‘Don’t Stop’ and ‘Werkin’ were to make some raw unpolished tracks inspired by older Detroit-Ghetto tracks, but with decreased BPM providing more of a techno flavour.”
The second track on the EP is ‘Without Fear’, which takes simplicity in structure and sound, combining modulated Detroit chords that provide aggression and catchiness, locking the listener into the groove. The result is a classic Motech / 3000 track that nicely bites with plenty of movement and pace. “I feel ‘Without Fear’ embodies the attitude of Detroit right now, and certainly through the course of history; we do what we do without two s* given as to what people think, because we will rise! The ‘Without Fear’ title comes from the early days of me making tunes where I didn’t give a s what anyone thought was hot or what was the in-trend production style of the moment. Just back to making music that comes to me at the time and roll with it. If I think it’s funky, I’m releasing it”, explains Franki.
‘Werkin EP’ [MT138] by DJ 3000 is available on Motech Records via all digital and streaming platforms from October 30th.
Watergate resident dj Yulia Niko appears on the club’s label with ‘Manifesto EP’, it features three originals and two remixes. The main themes show a raffinate flavor, dense of dancefloor influences, which embed a particular mix of deep house and tech house. The title track and the digital bonus ‘Hurts So Slow’ break through thanks to the particular music instrument setup. On the other side the remixes add a bit of techno in the ‘Manifesto’ song. YokoO in his solo remix adopts a meditational approach to the sounds, while in his another interpretation he joins the forces with Francesco Mami, creating a sensual and intriguing vibe.
Artist: Anthony Georges Patrice Title: The Wise Man And The Plants EP Label: Dance Artifakts Cat: DA013 Format: Digital Release Date: October 2nd 2020 Tracklist: Avena Sativa Damiana Damianita Lemon Verbena
Anthony Georges Patrice debuts on the underground Dance Artifakts with ‘The Wise Man And The Plants’. His EP reveals a dancefloor oriented nature, which is inspired by intense tribal and deep house influences; we can notice this kind of instrumental setup in many old records from the period of 2005-2010: Cadenza, Vakant and Freak ‘N’ Chic were popular labels that proposed this sound. Each Patrice’s song goes on smooth and fluently, in this way we can taste every aspect from the artist’s music vision.
Artist: Darenosa Title: Permission To Speak Label: Polyptych Cat: PLT149 Format: Digital Release Date: October 9th 2020 Tracklist: 1. Permission To Speak 2. Feel It Slow 3. Listen
Poland take-over: Polyptych is a label focused on the contemporary “melodic” house and techno, which offers to the audience an organic mixture of these electronic music influences. In the forthcoming release Darenosa appears for the first time in the label’s catalogue with ‘Permission To Speak’, a three track release that sums sensational vocals into good instrumentals. The vocals are functional to the drums or synths and vice-versa: we can’t imagine a standard dub mix of these tracks, because listening to them wouldn’t be the same, the emotions and the sensations aroused during the playback are exclusive and uncommon.
Artist: Tm Shuffle Title: Waterside Dubs EP Label: Outlaw Cat: OUTLAW008 Format: Digital, vinyl Release Date: October 9th 2020 Tracklist: A1. Viislampi Dub A2. Viimsi B1. Nocturnal Dub
A Finnish dj and producer under the moniker TM Shuffle debuts on the Matthew Oh’s imprint called Outlaw with the three tracker ‘Waterside Dubs EP’, a release heavly inspired by dub techno sounds. The productions float into this particular style, emerging and evolving from a static base to a dynamic and catchy rhythm structure.
Artist: Spencer Parker Title: New Works Volume Two Label: Work Them Records Cat. #: WTR046 Format: Digital & Vinyl Release Date: 25th September 2020 Tracklist: 01 Beat U 02 Vogue U
Spencer Parker continues his ‘New Works’ series with Volume Two, due for release in September.
Following a disco-fuelled release on Patrick Topping’s Trick, Spencer Parker gets back to his own Work Them Records imprint with the second volume of his ‘New Works’ series, which see the British born, Berlin- based producer in full, classic house mode yet again.
Opening the record with ‘Beat U’, Parker deploys deep, swirling pads atop classic 909 drums, creating the sort of stripped house dub that informed much of his early love affair with the genre.
On the flip, ’Vogue U’ sees chopped vocals at the forefront of the cut. Paired with a booming, kick focussed rhythm track and staccato piano stabs that nod to the golden era of house while keeping eyes firmly on the dance floors of the future.
The brand new deep house ‘Wanna Dance’ EP is born from the transatlantic collaboration between Turbojazz, Sean McCabe and Javanntte, a set of three interesting producers that are getting recognized for their house and deep house alike sounds. Their music is host on the fresh Last Forever Records, a label established in 2019. The original mix of ‘Wanna Dance’ shows a classic flavor, the semplicity and effectiveness of the instruments make a big role in the track, allowing space to the vocals and to the main chord. Following Moondance makes his version calling it ‘Hi-Tech Mix’, where the vibe gets mellow and dense: there the artist adds a sawtooth bassline and a ticker chord, unexpectedly a touch of sexiness is given with the introduction of some tribal percussions. The EP is completed with an EVM128’s remix, his interpretation breaks through since the beginning with a syncopate drum rhythm, building over it the elements coming from the main theme. The result is a diverse production that adds some diversity to the entire release, showing another oldschool influence from deep house music.
Artist: Dirk Sid Eno Title: Bonfire EP Label: 35 Grad Remixers: dOP, Andreas Henneberg Cat: 35Grad013 Format: Vinyl, digital Release Date: September 25th 2020 Tracklist: 1. Feisty When I’m Mad (Original Mix) 2. Feisty When I’m Mad (dOP Remix) 3. Mattled, Not Settled (Original Mix) 4. Mattled, Not Settled (Andreas Henneberg Remix)
We don’t know so much about Dirk Sid Eno but his music immediatly caught our attention. 35 Grad is set to release his ‘Bonfire EP’, a great example of contemporary tech house, really capable to radiate positive vibrations all around. Both the originals reveal a pacate, calm and wide-looking nature, it seems like these themes have been sharped with a smooth pencil, taking inspiration from surrounding spaces like forests and parks, places where harmony reigns. As opposite the experienced producers dOP (duo) and Andreas Henneberg make their own interpretations extracting the wild sides of the originals, elevating their potential and the dancefloor attitude.
