Unum Festival review

Unum Festival, First Unrestricted Festival Happened Last Weekend in Europe
Thousand of Revellers Attend First Festival in Albania – Backed by Albanian Government
Albania’s Unum Festival took place this last week as the first unrestricted festival in Europe with no hiccups and just pure joy coming from all the clubbers. The whole festival was supported by the Albanian Government through the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and Ministry of Health.
Over the whole event, close to 14,000 people turned up from all over England, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and even Israel, the USA, with 3,300 people from Kosovo, 2,600 from Albania and 2,050 from other Balkan places such as Montenegro, Serbia, Romania and Macedonia. The country of Albania dropped all restrictions because of the low overall contagion rate in the country, recording only two new infections on Saturday. At the event, 100% of staff – both local and overseas – were fully vaccinated. Gloves and masks where mandatory for the cleaning team and toilets and mass-access areas were disinfected regularly. As a result, so far everyone who had to do a PCR test on their way back home has tested negative.
The happy smiling faces at the event were a thing to behold – everyone in attendance was beaming from ear to ear, delighted to be hugging each other and in close, cuddly proximity to other dancers. After such a long time away from the communal experience that is a dance music festival, many people were literally hopping with joy as things got underway. People climbed on each others shoulders, high-fived and made new friendships quickly and freely right from the first beat.
Says the Director of UNUM Festival, Kushtrim Sahiti, “In the wake of one of the worse years for the music industry, UNUM Festival came as ship of hope in the sea of don’t and do’s for Festivals and events of this size. It was a huge success and we’re exhausted but glad that we managed to give music back to the people. And even better, it sure was hella good music!”
After debuting in 2019 and missing 2020, Unum finally got to build on its impressive early momentum with heady techno sounds, a gorgeous setting on the Albanian Riviera and a crowd so up for it they’d have dance for a week let alone a weekend. After some warm up sets for those who arrived on the Thursday, Friday really finds the festival hit its stride. There are three stages in all with music on the Main Stage, the Pine Stage and on the Beach Stage all playing late into the night. Each one is a mass of writing bodies, dancing energetically from the first to the last beat.
The beautiful Pine Stage, set amongst the tall, sweet smelling trees was a real standout and is fast becoming one of the most iconic in the European scene. The music runs on for 24 hours straight with standout performances from Frenchman Dyed Soundorom who played a deep, groovy set of house music that was as warm and balmy as the sun kissed day time had been. Raresh also lit up the place with a solo set before he went back to back with Praslea as Pralesh which was one of the festival highlights for five hot and unforgettable hours later on the Sunday morning. It is fitting that such a special stage was brought to a close by a suitably special DJ with the one and only Ricardo Villalobos closing it down with a left of centre masterclass on Monday morning. The world class underground sounds were in fine flow for the whole weekend, with master minimalists Cap, John Dimas, Digby and Cesare Merveille all getting particularly good crowd reactions as they waved their way through slick, stripped back sounds, the odd playful party classic and plenty of deeply dug out delights.
The crowd is made up of eager locals and few people from various spots around Europe who had navigate restrictions to make their way here. They were in loud voice on the Main Stage when techno titan and Cocoon chief Sven Vath drew the biggest crowd and really served up a huge set on Friday and Saturday. Berghain’s Ben Klock also brought his heavyweight techno sounds on Friday and Saturday next to party-ready cuts from Leon. The Beach Stage was a great place to hang during the day. The views out to sea are epic, the open beaches inviting and the soundtrack first class from the likes of Jamie Roy and Traumer who really found a perfect musical sweet spot to match the atmospheric vibe.
All in all this was a fantastic first dance back for many people after so long away.
MYR22 Digital Cover

Goeran Meyer feat. D-Lee ‘Push and Hold’

Artist: Goeran Meyer feat. D-Lee
Title: Push and Hold
Label: MYR
Cat. #: MYR22
Format: Digital
Release Date: 2nd July 2021

MYR label boss Goeran Meyer returns to his label in fantastic form. His two new tunes are backed by innovative remixes from Ivo Deutschmann, Nesker, Juli Lee and Kaiser Waldon.

This is Meyer’s first release since his last outing on this label back in September. As always, he keeps it deep while exploring the cinematic soundscape he enjoys so much. Whether DJing, producing or playing live, his approach to music is to always transport you through an ever-changing landscape of audio sculptures. His grooves get you moving, while his well-crafted sonic details occupy the mind, as this fresh EP attests.

Atmospheric opener ‘The Key’ first comes as a vocal mix. It is a deep and sparse House track with a bubbling rhythm and sustained chords that layer in melancholy under an eerie spoken word vocal. After the instrumental version comes the perfectly deep and warm ‘Three Days’. It has an airy groove that is light and gets you on your toes, while deft synths bring colour to an otherwise superbly shadowy track.

First to remix is Ivo Deutschmann, an MYR regular who first emerged in 1999 and has since been a pivotal artist. His version is reworked with a majestic breakdown that allows his synth craft to shine before the mid-tempo drums carry you away in a dynamic groove. Germany’s Nesker is another key MYR family member who does everything from melodic house to driving techno. His remix rides on bumpy kicks with glitchy snares, while lush, well-sequenced keys take your mind into the cosmos. Swiss artist Juli Lee combines groovy rhythms and driving basslines on all her tunes, and this fantastically futuristic remix is no different. Last of all, the chart-topping and prolific Bali-based producer, party host and DJ, Kaiser Waldon brings his brilliant basslines to a menacing, low key remix that rounds out a stylish package.

Rebirth, a distinctive Italian record label known for its numerous electro and progressive house EPs, is set to release an ambitious double vinyl release titled ‘Ciao Italia. Generazioni Underground’ (hello Italy, underground generations). Do you recognize the stylized man in the artwork? That was the logo used for the 1990 FIFA world cup, which was hosted in Italy. Anyway this is a great track collection, it brings back to life some really amazing and oldschool productions made around 1992. The release is an ode to all the Italian dj and producers who, 30 years ago, were into electronic music and got involved into a new wave of influences, contaminations and experimentations.
The vinyl publication features an interesting paper insert, where you can read some informations regarding the artists and the track selection.

Joseph Capriati ‘Love Changed Me’

Artist: Joseph Capriati & Eric Kupper feat. Byron Stingily
Title: Love Changed Me
Remixer: Masters At Work
Label: Redimension
Cat. #: REDIMENSION015
Release Date: 12th June (RSD Vinyl Only Exclusive) / 18th June (Streaming & Beatport Exclusive)
Format: Vinyl / Digital

Masters At Work remix Joseph Capriati, Eric Kupper, and Byron Stingily’s ‘Love Changed Me’ this June on Redimension.

Following two volumes of remixes that included DJ Stingray, Oxia, Carl Cox, François K, and more, ‘Love Changed Me (Masters At Work Remixes)’ brings the legendary pairing of New York’s Louie Vega and Kenny Dope together as Masters At Work to deliver a mammoth six remixes of ‘Love Changed Me’ on two 12” vinyl this June.

“Masters At Work are the real first artists that inspired me in music since I was 11 years old. I have been listening to their music anytime, every day, anywhere and collecting the whole Masters At Work records catalog. This is a dream that came true! I have a lot of respect for them professionally and personally and this release means a lot for me.” – Joseph Capriati

Leading the collection is the ‘Masters At Work Remix Vox Mix’, a full-blown NYC house bomb, dousing Stingily’s vocal performance in reverb around piano licks and gliding pads as MAW’s inimitable drum work runs beneath. ‘Maw Rowdy Adlib Dub’ sees the duo run the vocal track through a variety of off-kilter effects over powerful, clicky drums and dubbed-out stabs, while the ‘Maw Rowdy Dub’ strips the vocals down even more, accentuating the powerful production.

‘Maw Bubble Bass Mix’ brings a jacking take to the track, throwing heavily swung percussion alongside bubbling synth work. Additionally, a set of instrumental versions are provided, with ‘Maw Instrumental’ and ‘Maw Bubble Bass Inst’ stripping the tracks of Stingily’s performance for vocal shy DJs. Also included is the original cut from 2020’s ‘Metamorfosi’, which displays Capriati, Eric Kupper and Byron Stingily at their finest.

“We had a great time working on ‘Love Changed Me’, and felt good to come back in the game as MAW with this one here amongst others. It’s been a true musical pleasure to contribute to the new Joseph Capriati project. Dubs and Vocal versions, something for everyone, a Masters At Work interpretation!” – Masters At Work
