Apnoea ‘Phnk’

Artist: Apnoea
Title: Phnk
Label: Stripped Down
Cat. #: STRD020
Format: Digital
Release Date: 20th August 2021
Tracklist:
01 Phnk
02 Wormhole
03 Phnk (John Tejada Remix)

Melodic house and techno newcomers Apnoea continue to make waves with a superb offering on Stripped Down that comes backed with a John Tejada remix.

This German duo only debuted on the legendary Mobilee Records in spring 2021, but immediately turned plenty of heads. They have a combined 40 years of experience in the studio that has given rise to big solo projects on Noir Music, Get Physical, Last Night on Earth and many other labels. They remixed Timo Maas on Stripped Down earlier in the year, and their full debut on the label showcases a richly layered and emotive sound across two superb tunes.

They open up with the excellent ‘Phnk,’ a deep roller with twitchy synths and slick claps. As the synths grow in energy, you’re lifted off your feet and transported to the stars on a smooth and seductive house groove. ‘Wormhole’ is just as well crafted and hypnotic, this time with more edgy synth motifs looping above pinging kick drums. There is tension in the bleeping keys and turbulent bass that makes for added drama as the eight-minute trip unfolds.

Remixer and LA-based artist John Tejada is a long-time tech house mainstay. His famously pristine, well-crafted sounds have landed him on labels like Kompakt and Cocoon and made him one of the scene’s most consistent performers. Here he flips ‘Phnk’ into a sublime track built on clean breakbeats, with rich melodic patterns and lively bass all working to suspend you above the dancefloor.

This is another stylish statement from this fast-rising duo.

Traum-V256

Bar.ba ‘Primavera EP’

Artist: Bar.ba
Title: Primavera EP
Label: Traum
Cat. #: Traum V256
Release Date: 03 September 2021
Tracklist:
1 Primavera
2. Us
3. Bucaneve
4. Silene
5. Tarassaco

Bar.ba’s debut on TRAUM!

The Italian DJ/Producer Bar.ba based in Bergamo has been absorbing techno and house music since an early age and has developed a fascination for that culture. He has been involved in a DJ career and projects where he collected his experience.
Bar.ba keeps a low profile and although he is responsible for a dozen of releases including a single on well know German label Brise records and single trax in compilations on Monaberry and Ritter Butzke records + smaller labels he is still one of the best kept secrets in the scene.

So we are happy to be the first German label to release a full length 5 track EP with him.
Bar.ba’s music is very much driven by the idea of wanting to write music totally independent from any categorization and without any compromise and that is just how Traum started as a label. Maybe it is no accident that his EP connects nicely to the simplistic gems of our past by Fairmont, Process, Dinky, Andreas Fragel, Broker/Dealer, Iquin, Bern and Oliver Hacke. Bar.ba’s music can be described as organic house with a strong alternative-indie side to it.
It is in fact, very very deep and very personal music.

“Primavera“

The EP kicks off with “Primavera” which articulates itself through a dreamlike state of things with heavenly vocals and post Chicago deep house ambience! This piece of minimalism relies on every single sound. Sounds which are well chosen and show he is a true taste maker when it comes to minimalist deep house music.

“Us“

“Us” unfolds like a microcosmos in a hole, a private party where the vocals of Bar.ba are the star but when they are over the stars in the sky send back their message to mingle with the reminiscence of his. “Us” feels like curbed enthusiasm, a happy-sad, quiet poetic affair. Maybe never meant to be heard by anyone but the writer himself. We are happy to be able to be part of this party.

“Bucaneve“

“Bucaneve” feels like it was happening in a stalactite cave but changes scenery adding sensual heavenly vocals and small curling melodies. The track is as light as a snow owl.

“Silene“

“Silene” connects smoothly to the other track. It features celestial vocals that mix the comfort zone of deep house with a more personal edgy style that we like.

“Tarassaco

“Tarassaco” is the outro track of the EP featuring those sounds that have no borders and spread like a giant ocean breeze. Sounds that you might have discovered here and there in the other tracks of the EP but which come here without beats and vocals.

Sofian Rouge ‘Amalthée EP’

Artist: Sofian Rouge
Title: Amalthée EP
Label: Moon Beam Records
Cat. #: MB05
Format: Vinyl, Digital
Release Date: 13th August 2021
Tracklist:
01 Amalthée
02 Les Louves
03 Saturn Pills
04 South Star

French composer and musician Sofian Rouge captures a series of glorious musical moments on his expressive new Amalthée EP for Moon Beam Records.

Frédéric Faupin is an artist who thinks deeply about the music he makes, always looking to imbue it with a sense of his personality. He has put out well-received concept albums – ‘Surface’ in 2019 and ‘Between Time & Earth’ in 2013 – and has collaborated with Ben Watt, Doc Brown, and Fabrizio Mammarella. The Frenchman makes heady, dreamy techno as inspired by Jean-Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream and shows that in style here.

The superb opener ‘Amalthée’ is an eight-minute deep electronic excursion. Dreamy pads drift through a cavernous space with soft drums and delicate pianos, bringing an emotional weight that keeps you locked. The heart-aching ‘Les Louves’ opens with more brilliantly delicate piano notes before a supple groove eventually rolls in from underneath. Synths are wispy as they drift by like clouds, and a melancholy feeling of longing permeates the whole track.

‘Saturn Pills’ picks up the pace with more upbeat drums, but the mood is still delicate, with modulated synths unfolding with elegance and grace above another rolling, well-designed groove. The cuddly deepness continues on ‘South Star,’but this time there is more hope and optimism in the twinkling keys up top and the more airy chords, draped over gentle drums.

Sofian Rouge’s Amalthée EP is as honest and vulnerable as techno gets, and as such, makes a truly lasting impression.

  4. KOLTER – Your Love My Pain

DJOKO makes his first appearance on Up The Stuss as he reveals his latest EP, ‘My Bad Your Fault’.

Combine Cologne, HOOVE, and quality house, and it can only leave you with one artist – DJOKO. Already a favourite for many, the surging German continues to impress with diverse cuts via labels such as Berg Audio, PIV, Shall Not Fade, Rutilance Recordings, and his young but thriving HOOVE imprint. Offering up a wealth of vibrant tones, his ‘My Bad Your Fault’ EP on Up The Stuss serves up yet another quintessential release for both artist and label – fusing a trio of impactful, innovative trips alongside a futuristic slice of electro under his revered KOLTER alias.

A powerful, slinking opener armed with classic organ stabs, swirling synths, and driving drums, title production ‘My Bad Your Fault’ sets the tone from the first minute as DJOKO flexes his studio talents in full, while ‘My Dog Never Barks’ introduces a playful yet powerful slice of funk to proceedings as rubbery bass licks meet spacey leads throughout. ‘Unknown Territory’ opens the b-side and welcomes the arrival of a paired back affair as dubby pads float alongside shuffling percussion, before switching things up as KOLTER and closing the show via the sci-fi leaning, atmospheric synth squiggles, vocoder vocals, and rolling breaks of closing cut ‘Your Love My Pain’.

Spencer Parker ‘ddbb’

Artist: Spencer Parker
Title: ddbb
Label: Work Them Records
Cat. #: WTR048
Format: Digital
Release Date: 6th August 2021

Spencer Parker returns to his Work Them Records imprint in August with ‘ddbb’.

After the raw house sounds of his last drop, ‘Dream The Future’, Parker engages Disco mode with ‘ddbb’, a breezy but low-slung houser shot through with disco strings and horns.

As usual with Parker’s material, ‘ddbb’ is as simple as it is effective, with not one bit of it’s 6:44min run time waster or superfluous.

Feiertag ‘Time To Recover Remixes’

Artist: Feiertag
Title: Time To Recover Remixes
Label: Sonar Kollektiv
Cat. #: SK406
Format: Vinyl, digital
Release Date: 30th July 2021
Tracklist:
A1 – Saccharine 374 (Session Victim Dubfeier Remix)

B2 – Trepidation feat. Msafiri Zawose (Kyodai Afro Mix)

Having teased a selection of singles from the upcoming Feiertag album Time To Recover, Sonar Kollektiv now offer up remixes of them by Session Victim, Jimpster and Kyodai.

Feiertag is a label mainstay who fuses syncopated downtempo rhythms with international vocalists to make for exotic, escapist grooves. He has also done so for labels like Last Night on Earth and Kitsune while performing mesmeric live shows. The new album is a hugely anticipated debut that has already spawned two brilliant singles in ‘Saccharine 374’ and ‘Trepidation’ which both get remixed here.

German live maestros Session Victim are known for their superbly organic and soul drenched releases and that is what they bring with their Dubfeier Remix of ‘Saccharine 374’. It is a lovely loose groove filled with sunshine, glistening chords and a subtle sense of funk that makes you want to move.

Jimpster is a bonafide UK deep house legend who has established his Freerange label as one of the best in the scene. His own gloriously musical and tender productions come laced with musicianship, as does his fantastic take on ‘Saccharine 374’. It is a rich and warm upbeat house jam with nice dry hits and golden pads that ooze lusciousness.

Lastly, brotherly Spanish duo Kyodai have got a fine reputation for their work on Compost, Odori, Om and Lovemonk. They offer two remixes of ‘Trepidation’, firstly a ‘Missing The Dancefloor Remix’ which is surely subtle and heady, with a melodic bassline and spine tingling vocals getting you in the mood to groove. Finally, the Afro Mix is built on jittery African rhythms with life affirming jazz chords and a hypotonic flute lead that brings plenty of joy.

This is a package with four brilliantly different interpretations that all offer plenty.
