Dutch house legend Michel de Hey delivers his ‘It Doesn’t Get Echter’ EP on Madhouse, backed by a remix from fellow countryman Locklead.

A mainstay at the heart of the Dutch house scene for over thirty years, Rotterdam’s Michel de Hey continues to solidify his position as one of the Netherland’s finest electronic music exports. A DJ, producer, label boss and promoter, the multi-faceted talent has released a plethora of stand-out releases throughout his career via labels such as Rejected, Poker Flat, Ovum, Relief and his latest imprint, In The Future, whilst featuring across a long list of internationally renowned venues and festivals to date. Next up, July welcomes a debut appearance on Kerri Chandler’s Madhouse Records as he delivers his ‘It Doesn’t Get Echter’ EP on the label, whilst Slapfunk regular Locklead steps up on remix duties.

Opening cut ‘Echter’ showcases a wealth of classy house sonics, from rich key leads through to refined drum licks and sweeping synths, so offer up a stylish house gem, before Locklead’s ‘Intergalactic Remix’ takes the production down a warping journey of hypnotic, dubby pads, tripped out vocals and punchy kicks. To close, ‘Marsssss’ meets the two previous productions somewhere in the middle as de Hey introduces skipping percussion loops alongside icy hats and further resonant organ work to shape up proceedings in impressive fashion.

BPX007

Boston 168 ‘Vax Of Love’

Artist: Boston 168
Title: Vax Of Love
Label: BPitch Berlin
Cat. #: BPX007
Format: 12“ / Digital
Release Date: July 3, 2020
Distribution: Rough Trade / The Orchard

BPitch Control welcomes Italian acid duo Boston 168 back to the fold as the label’s 2020 campaign continues. The pair produced the ‘909 Therapy’ EP back in 2018, so it’s a pleasure to have them return with ‘Vax Of Love’, a three-track continuation of their experiments with industrial sounds and the timeless appeal of the beloved Roland TR-303 and its squelchy secretions. What we have here is the product of one of Italy’s ‘Motor Cities’, the ghosts of abandoned factories present in every beat, bassline and acid-tinged motif.

First up is ‘Kiss My Accent’, a dense playful cut with a potent analogue hoover effect keeping the energy levels high. Pounding beats propel the track forward, while the analogue riff warps and twists, modulating into various guises throughout. It’s dramatic and tense, moving the listener physically and mentally.

This is followed by ‘Mononucleacid’, which has a morose feeling from the start. The drums stomp down sending shockwaves through the ground as the rhythm grabs you and refuses to let go. We’re taken back with a nineties influence, though the production levels are crisp and contemporary. As the cut progresses Boston 168 cultivate a stirring atmosphere designed to ignite the dance floor and cause uproar.

Finally, ‘Vax Of Love’ takes us into breakbeat territory as the duo put their own spin on a familiar drum pattern. It’s strange and unique, with rousing organ-esque effects working in tandem with cosmic squelch effects and a wistful spoken word sample. The beats switch up, taking on a 4×4 rhythm at one point, Boston 168 showcasing their creative flair with this one. The intensity increases after a short breakdown, leading us to the interstellar ending.

UWM001

Various  ‘Break The Silence’

Artist: Various
Title: Break The Silence
Label: United World Music
Cat. #: UWM001
Format: Digital Download / Streaming
Release Date: 04 July 2020

‘Break The Silence’ stands in solidarity with Campaign Zero and the Black Lives Matter movement and all marginalized communities that have for too long faced injustice and inequity.  Featuring 14 unreleased tracks kindly donated by some of the finest voices in contemporary electronic music, this collection’s purpose is to raise as much money for and awareness of Campaign Zero’s mission to end police violence in America.

In the days and weeks since the tragic killings of Rayshard Brooks, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Elijah McClain and countless others before them, Campaign Zero’s vision is a world where the police don’t kill people by limiting police interventions, improving community interactions, ensuring accountability and developing model legislation and advocacy.

The compilation heads out with the politically charged ‘State of Emergency’ from Chicago’s K’ Alexi Shelby & Tony Loveless, a track that wears its heart on it’s sleeve.  As K. Alexi says, “I was more than happy to be part of this project and feel that it was long overdue and beyond necessary for those who know me, know that I’ve never been shy about speaking my opinion about the white washing of, well, hell everything.  Hopefully this will set things back on the right path and give those who have laid down the groundwork for this thing of ours a chance to be heard.”

Detroit’s Eddie Fowlkes similarly injects political overtones into his Tech-Soul drenched ‘Pandemic One’ whilst a skip across the pond has drum n bass pioneers 4hero team up with D&B legend Goldie and crank up the pressure in dance floor unity with the deep and jazzy ‘Universal Love (Dubstars)’ – Internal Affairs remix.  Staying in the UK, London based techno don Ben Sims tears things up as only he knows how with the aptly titled ‘Break It Down’, compatriot Mark Broom brings it home with the dark and driving ‘Gunna’ and Luke Slater takes us on an electronic detour as Planetary Assault Systems with ‘Huddler’s Source of Wonder’.

Handing the baton back to the States, we find Robert Hood in imperious minimal mood as ‘The Redeemer’ marries new production techniques to his classic sound whilst LA’s Adrian Sandoval, a.k.a. Developer makes his voice heard with the powerful punch of ‘Cultural Conditioning.’  Not forgetting that there is still very a much a message in the music, UR’s Mark Flash delivers the ‘Voice of Detroit’ featuring speech on Black Lives Matter by Coleman Young Jr. – son of the late, great Detroit Mayor, Coleman A. Young.  “It explains what it means, and why it’s important to see the value of the lives of black people and their contributions to society.”

Berlin based, UK artist Rebekah adds her industrial clout to the project with the ferocious ‘Stealing Fire and Radioslave man Matt Edwards and Patrick Mason join forces with their club-thumping SRVD project and the equally teutonic ‘In The Dark’.

Back to the ‘D’ we find UR’s Jon Dixon with the more delicately balanced techno of ‘Counterpoint’ before we descend back into the deep rumbling bass lines of Sinistarr x K-Dan’s ‘Apollo’.  Last but by no means least we find the man whose drive and dedication rallied the troops for this project into action as EPM’s Oliver Way hooks up with Belgian techno producer Dany Rodriguez for the anthemic ‘First Act.’

The world of dance music is united in its cry for change.  Turn it up and break the silence!

John Monkman, Chi Thanh and Inta remix Booka Shade & Joplyn’s ‘Polar Lights’ on Blaufield Music this July.

A production crafted by one of Germany’s leading electronic acts Booka Shade, and featuring the excellent vocals of fellow Berlin-based producer and vocalist Joplyn, ‘Polar Lights’ showcases yet another side to the vast and expansive Booka Shade sound palette. Originally featured on the duo’s latest album ‘Dear Future Self’, the emotive production now sees new life via three fresh reworks as the Blaufield Music bosses welcome London-based DJ and producer John Monkman, label regular Chi Thanh and rising pairing Inta.

Of the three new versions, Monkman’s interpretation kicks things off in hypnotic fashion as the UK talent merges warping electronics and soaring synths alongside pulsating arpeggios and metallic percussion, whilst Chi Thanh employs chunky, resonant analogue bass stabs alongside sweeping vocal snippets. The final remix comes via Scottish and South African duo Inta, who make their label debut in style utilising suspenseful builds and breaks comprised of snaking lead melodies, cavernous drum shots and rich vocal hooks to offer up a peak-time rework to shape up the package.

JUN007 PACKSHOT Jun Kamoda - Escape The Night - Jun Records

Jun Kamoda ‘Escape The Night’

Artist: Jun Kamoda
Title : Escape The Night
Label: Jun Records
Cat. #: JUN007
Format: Vinyl & Digital
Release: 3rd July 2020
Tracklist
:
1. Escape The Night
2. Funky Protection

Black Acre artist Jun Kamoda delivers ‘Escape The Night’, a two-track sample-based house single released in July via his own Jun Records.

Kamoda’s carefree attitude to genre conventions and sampling has made for unique listening in recent years, something heavily informed by his past as leftfield hip hop act MC Illreme. Here, ‘Escape The Night’ is gloriously upbeat tonic with a heavily swung groove, staccato synth funk-bass and breezy chords providing the backdrop to a vocal taken from City Pop singer Hitomitoi ’The Night’.

On the flip, Kamoda twists Japanese funk band Zainichi Funk’s infectious ‘Bakudan Kowai’ into a breaky house cut that oozes an intense, throw-down dancefloor weapon. As with the title track, Kamoda is having fun in the studio and it shines through the music.

REJ090 COVER Josh Butler - Back - Rejected

Josh Butler ‘Back’

Artist: Josh Butler
Title: Back
Label: Rejected
Cat. #: REJ090
Format: Digital
Release Date: 26th June 2020
Tracklist
1. Back
2. Baobab

Rejected favourite Josh Butler returns to the label this June to offer up his two-track ‘Back’ EP.

A leading DJ, producer, A&R and label boss, Josh Butler is an artist forever in evolution. Having released his eight- track ‘Timezones’ series on home turf to close 2019, showcasing his dynamic range as a producer in the process, the ORIGINS RCRDS label head has picked things up in 2020 in equally as impressive fashion with collaborations, remixes and original productions finding favour with names right across the electronic sphere – from Sasha and Digweed through to The Black Madonna, DJ Sneak, Laurent Garnier and Anja Schneider. Next up, late-June sees a welcome return to Rejected as he delivers his fourth EP on the label, entitled ‘Back’.

“This EP was one of the last I finished at my studio before moving my equipment home for the lockdown. The A-side is a peak-time tool with African inspired rhythm and percussion, whilst I’d heard the word Baobab on a documentary for the B-side. It’s a unique looking tree commonly found in Africa and, I’d always loved the look of them so I had to use it for a track title. The track to me sounds quite natural and almost wooden so it felt fitting”. – Josh Butler

Title cut ‘Back’ opens the package and quickly enters into a snaking, hypnotic journey through delayed vocal interjections, resonant dubby stabs and sweeping synths, whilst the paired back ‘Baobab’ harnesses refined organic percussion hits beneath blossoming lead melodies, punchy low-end hits and further tripped-out vocal work to shape up yet another notable outing on Rejected from one of the UK’s leading house music talents.
