Sam Holland ‘Supersonic / Banshee’

Artist: Sam Holland
Title: Supersonic / Banshee
Label: Four Thirty Two
Cat. #: 432R016
Release Date: 4th September 2020
Tracklist:
1) Supersonic
2) Banshee
3) Supersonic (James Solace remix)

Sam Holland is no stranger to Richy Ahmed’s Four Thirty Two label. Having made up one half of Senzala, the duo released a well-received single, the ‘Phase’ EP, and a collaborative release with Jansons, before heading their separate ways. Now on solo ventures, Holland tees up a solid two track single, backed with a remix from James Solace.

‘Supersonic’ finds Holland teasing and filtering a sweet disco loop over a spirited drum pattern, female vox snippets and a rumbling bassline, its breakdown indeed sending this track supersonic!

James Solace follows up his own recent Four Thirty Two release, as well as entries into the Hot Creations and Last Night On Earth arsenal, with a scintillating remix. Keeping the disco vibes very much alive, Solace’s mix doesn’t deviate too much from the original, but it’s a slick and nifty take that adds a superb spin to this release.

‘Banshee’ rolls with punchy percussion and driving force, a track that focuses on the drums in a classic Dub Mix tradition, evoking shades of Dennis Ferrer, Kerri Chandler and the timeless US house style.

PL027NK ARTWORK

Joaquin Ruiz ‘Voices Of Space LP’

Artist: Joaquin Ruiz
Title : Voices Of Space LP
Label: PLOINK
Cat #: PL027NK
Format: Vinyl & Digital
Release Date: 28th August 2020

Buenos Aires-based producer Joaquin Ruiz returns to Norway’s PLOINK with his debut album, ‘Voices Of Space LP’, featuring ten ethereal tracks.

Argentinian artist Joaquin Ruiz has continually challenged the senses with twisted releases on labels like Blackrod, Affekt and Hardtools, which have garnered support from Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, Ben Sims, and Dax J. He now returns to Thomas Urv and Miss Mostly’s Bergen-based techno label for his most impressive body of work yet.

‘Voices Of Space’ opens with an enticing stereo landscape, lush with bubbling samples and subtle percussion, ‘Hypnotic Alert’ moves by upping the energy with tight kicks and eerie synths when ‘Mantrack’ then finalises the A-side with soft keys and distant melodic flurries. On the flip, ‘Nuclear Substance’ kick starts with propulsive drums and chiming tubular-like sounds until ‘Altered System’ adds in cantering sub-frequencies and rapid snares, providing a cavernous feel to the mix.

Next, ‘Genesick’ gives a sense of spatial progression with fleeting plucks and white noise before ‘Reset’ initiates a more club-focused shift with acid stabs, field recordings and splashing cymbals. ‘Satellite’ readjusts the aural journey with casting pads and computerised bleeps that lead to the harrowing rhythms and celestial chords of ‘Challenged’, ahead of ‘Times’ that beautifully concludes the album with sharp risers, zappy effects and low-swung beats.

Tracklist:

A1 – Voices Of Space
A2 – Hypnotic Alert
A3 – Mantrack
B1 – Nuclear Substance
B2 – Altered System
C1 – Genesick
C2 – Reset
C3 – Satellite
D1 – Challenged
D2 – Times

Returning to toucan sounds for their second release, musclecars drop a deep and soulful release inspired by NYC entitled ‘Street Dreams’ featuring vocalist Tiff Ortiz.

Real names Brandon Weems and Craig Handfield, musclecars have fast become key players in New York’s vibrant house scene, whether helming their monthly Coloring Lessons events or making regular appearances on The Lot Radio. Earlier this year they made their production debut on French Horn Rebellion’s toucan sounds which included a collaboration alongside Grammy-nominated vocalist Brandon Markell Holmes. Inspired by their city, ‘Street Dreams’ is their follow up that embodies the essence of the neighbourhoods in which their reflections are housed.

‘Sun Track I’ is a beautiful opener with layered synths and a nearly beatless rhythm powered by subtle organic drums, topped off with the stunning vocals from fellow Brooklyn native Tiff Ortiz. With its funky guitar licks, intricate percussion and sultry bassline, ‘The Man Who Kept Bedstuy Warm’ is deep house at its best before ‘Sol’ follows with its low-slung groove, poignant piano keys and whispering vocals. Tying everything together, ‘Sun Track II (for Black Healing)’ is another stripped-back vocal trip oozing with soul.

True to his dinstictive sound, label boss Goeran Meyer brings a unique sense of style to the EP by keeping it deep while exploring the cinematic soundscape he enjoys so much. His approach is to always start with a journey, the context of how the sounds unfold is as important as the music itself as he transports you through an ever-changing landscape of musical sculptures. He is a man of exceptional studio craft and that shines through on both these cuts.

The first track ‘Precious Human’ is a delicate blend of warm synths and a punchy bed of drum grooves with darkened stabs representing the emotional aspects of the work. Sizzling second track ‘Inner Gold’ lifts the energy with a rolling progression of grooves that, along with an evolving analogue bassline, bring real energy to the track.

No stranger to the MYR roster, Juli Lee brings her iconic dark energy to the collection with her deep, groovy style. Her super take on ‘Precious Human’ provides the perfect yin-yang balance to Goeran’s deeper original as the track picks up to become a truly classic example of Juli’s unique sound.

Nesker is another label regular and key house talent. He steps up with a deep, emotionally seductive remix that showcases his darker, deeper vibes so well. His love for warm, granular synths and compressed drums always delivers a certain level of emotion and his brilliant rendition of the original brings it full circle. This is another excellently well rounded EP from all.

DJ 3000 ‘Don’t Stop EP’

Artist: DJ 3000
Title: Don’t Stop EP
Label: Motech Records
Cat. #: MT137
Format: Digital Download / Streaming
Release Date: 25 September 2020
Tracklist:
1. Don’t Stop
2. Reckless
3. Undertow

In what has been a year of global disruption on a catastrophic scale, 2020 will be rightly remembered for many negatives. This year will also be marked as a phase in time when many of us extensively self-reflected and evaluated our lives, morals, priorities and our goals. For some techno artists, and many cultural Industry players, the gift of time to dedicate to the art of creativity isn’t a reality when there are bills to pay. Therefore lockdown represented an opportunity for many creatives that hold down regular 9-5’s to reset and rediscover creative flow without the normal everyday external distractions. This is the case for Motech Records founder and Detroit techno veteran, DJ 3000 who presents this smart collection of tracks on the new ‘Don’t Stop EP’, on Motech Records.

This, DJ 3000s first autonomous release since ‘Outnumbered EP’ which dropped in the Autumn of 2019, features three exclusive ‘quintessentially Detroit bangers and arguably some of his strongest creative output in recent years. DJ 3000 adds: “the lockdown granted us all time we wouldn’t usually have, so it was good to be productive and put my new studio through it’s paces. After making a bunch of tracks, these three I feel resonate the most right now.”

The opener and title track ‘Don’t Stop’ is minimal Detroit techno at its purest and finest. DJ 3000 hits the proverbial nail on the head with this techno delight, slamming kicks, interlaced with smooth vocal chops and e-piano / organ stabs building a subtle, groove-filled melodic contrast to the intense thumping kicks; a track that will slot into any techno DJ’s set-list. ‘Reckless’, utilises the synth chord sound synonymous with DJ 3000 in this high-energy second track. Its production is sharp and the kicks punch with venom and purpose. Last but not least is ‘Undertow’. DJ 3000 flexes his underrated and under the radar versatility in creativity. It’s all about the raw, popping analogue excitement generated by the Roland 909, set against a baseline that compliments, as well as providing plenty of groove.

With new music like this, 2020 may not turn out to be as disappointing as it’s promised, after all.
