Format: Digital
Release Date: 2nd October 2020
Tracklist:

  1. Eduardo De La Calle – Losing my Cohn Mind 2
  2. Eduardo De La Calle – New Neoliberal Ideas
  3. Varsoom – Our Planet
  4. Varsoom – Another Day

Nebur Recordings is a brand new label that kicks off with a superb split EP from techno mainstay Eduardo De La Calle and Varsoom.

The gully prolific Spaniard De La Calle has long been serving up seductively deep and atmospheric techno on labels like the great Planet E, Turbo and Hivern Discs. He has worked under a wide range of aliases and is a critical thinker who imbues his music with spiritualism and wisely sought out samples. Varsoom, meanwhile, is a mysterious figure from Berlin who is only just getting started, but on the evidence served up here, already has a fully formed and fascinating sound.

First up is De La Calle with ‘Losing My Cohn Mind 2’, which is a tunnelling piece of hypnotic techno with dubby chords and deep, sonar like synth pulses. It draws you into its mysterious atmosphere and keeps you there while freaky vocals bring wonderful weirdness. Then comes ‘Neoliberal Ideas’, a darker and more intense track but one that is still spacious and inviting. Withering synths and occult sonic motifs drift about the mix to make it evocative and unsettling as well as groovy.

Varsoom steps up on the flip with ‘Another Day,’ which is melancholic and stripped back to a rolling drum line and haunting lead synth. Percussion joins the mix with an undulating bassline and locks you in a zoned out state of bliss. Closing out the EP is ‘Our Planet’ which has an end of days feel thanks to the roaming and sombre synth and rubbery drums. It’s pensive, evocative techno for the thinking dance floors out there.

Booka Shade return to Blaufield Music to open October with their ‘Blaze Of Unity’ EP.

As summer draws to a close, Blaufield Music bosses Booka Shade are certainly showing no signs of slowing down as they continue through one of their most productive and musically rich twelve months to date. Hot on the heels of their latest long-player ‘Dear Future Self’, plus their 2020 remix package for their iconic MORE! project and their recent collaboration with Jan Blomqvist where the title track originally made its first appearance, the ever-impressing duo now bring ‘Blaze Of Unity’ to its own EP this October – accompanied by three fresh original productions.

The duo open the EP via the murky and warping sonics of ‘State Of Grace’, a transcending cut combining escalating leads with darker, more eerie soundscapes, whilst ‘Blush 9’ welcomes the introduction of sweeping, atmospheric pads and resonant acid-tinged melodies throughout. Next up, ‘Time Traveller’ introduces a well worked balance of trademark Booka Shade synths alongside rich strings and crisp percussion arrangements, before closing via the familiar rich, club-driven sounds of title cut, ‘Blaze Of Unity’.

Nepotek ‘It’s Me’

Artist: Nepotek
Title : It’s Me
Label: Plus Future Records
Cat. #: PFR003
Format: Digital
Release Date: 25th September 2020
Tracklist:
01 Nepotek – It’s Me (Basic Beauty Mix)
02 Nepotek – It’s Me (Paul Johnson’s Jack Nation Remix)
03 Nepotek – It’s Me (Peter Pixzel Remix)
04 Nepotek – It’s Me (Alexi Delano Remix)
05 Nepotek – It’s Me (Meitei Remix)
06 Nepotek – It’s Me (Twisted Deep Tech Mix)

Keeping up momentum following two well-received releases, Plus Future Records label owner and producer Nepotek drops ‘It’s Me’, with a wide range of quality remixes from Paul Johnson, Peter Pixzel, Alexi Delano, and Meitei.

‘It’s Me’ sees Nepotek utilise crunchy, hypnotic drums amongst piano licks, murky pads and vocal chops to form a deep and hazy vibe. Next, a remix from Chicago’s Paul Johnson, renowned for early works on legendary labels such as Peacefrog and Dance Mania. Paul’s decades of experience come into their own, and by adding an addictive groove, light synth work, and extra vocal chants, maximising the track for peak time club impact.

Fabric regular and WetYourSelf! co-founder Peter Pixzel’s version follows suit in fine style, flipping the track into a trippy, heads-down affair, while Visionquest and alphahouse affiliate Alexi Delano transforms the track into a shimmering downtempo delight complete with muted jazzy tones and light, shuffling percussion, a departure from the minimal sound he’s become known for over the years.

In a similar fashion, Japan’s Meitei gives ‘It’s Me’ the ambient treatment, with a slow burning piano motif evolving alongside the warmth of crackling, binaural atmospheres, reminiscent of his Pitchfork approved album from last year. Rounding off the release is an alternate take on the original from Nepotek himself, with the addition of an acid bassline weaving through, this mix mangles elements of the original into a truly twisted alternative.

DJ 3000 ‘Werkin EP’

Artist: DJ 3000
Title: Werkin EP
Label: Motech Records
Cat. #: MT138
Format: Digital Download / Streaming
Release Date: 30 October 2020
Tracklist:
1. Werkin
2. Without Fear

Hot on the heels and imminent success of DJ 3000’s impressive ‘Don’t Stop EP’, comes ‘Werkin EP’ [MT 138]. DJ 3000’s second EP of the year drops again on his own imprint, Motech Records. This second EP is a two-track affair, and like his ‘Don’t Stop EP’ was produced during the middle of the Covid-19 lockdown.

Motech founder and artist DJ 3000 (aka Franki Juncaj) says, “loads of ideas came to me and like lightning in a bottle you gotta capture it.” The title track, ‘Werkin’ is a continuation of the soundscapes explored with his critically acclaimed track ‘Don’t Stop’. Crisp hitting 909’s along with analogue chords and droning vocal chop give ‘Werkin’ a real old-skool authenticity. DJ 3000 explains, “my ideas for both ‘Don’t Stop’ and ‘Werkin’ were to make some raw unpolished tracks inspired by older Detroit-Ghetto tracks, but with decreased BPM providing more of a techno flavour.”

The second track on the EP is ‘Without Fear’, which takes simplicity in structure and sound, combining modulated Detroit chords that provide aggression and catchiness, locking the listener into the groove. The result is a classic Motech / 3000 track that nicely bites with plenty of movement and pace. “I feel ‘Without Fear’ embodies the attitude of Detroit right now, and certainly through the course of history; we do what we do without two s* given as to what people think, because we will rise! The ‘Without Fear’ title comes from the early days of me making tunes where I didn’t give a s what anyone thought was hot or what was the in-trend production style of the moment. Just back to making music that comes to me at the time and roll with it. If I think it’s funky, I’m releasing it”, explains Franki.

‘Werkin EP’ [MT138] by DJ 3000 is available on Motech Records via all digital and streaming platforms from October 30th.

Spencer Parker ‘New Works Volume Two’

Artist: Spencer Parker
Title: New Works Volume Two
Label: Work Them Records
Cat. #: WTR046
Format: Digital & Vinyl
Release Date: 25th September 2020
Tracklist:
01 Beat U
02 Vogue U

Spencer Parker continues his ‘New Works’ series with Volume Two, due for release in September.

Following a disco-fuelled release on Patrick Topping’s Trick, Spencer Parker gets back to his own Work Them Records imprint with the second volume of his ‘New Works’ series, which see the British born, Berlin- based producer in full, classic house mode yet again.

Opening the record with ‘Beat U’, Parker deploys deep, swirling pads atop classic 909 drums, creating the sort of stripped house dub that informed much of his early love affair with the genre.

On the flip, ’Vogue U’ sees chopped vocals at the forefront of the cut. Paired with a booming, kick focussed rhythm track and staccato piano stabs that nod to the golden era of house while keeping eyes firmly on the dance floors of the future.

Marcal ‘Reduction Pt.1’

Artist: Marcal
Title : Reduction Pt.1
Label: Rekids Special Projects
Cat. #: RSPX22
Release Date: 18th September 2020
Format: Digital
Tracklist:
01 Marcal – Ainozama
02 Marcal – Cherry On Top
03 Marcal – Heart Race
04 Marcal, Andc & Gabal – Estado de Transe
05 Marcal & Hosben – Renoir

Brazilian producer Marcal joins Rekids Special Projects series with a rumbling five-track techno release this September.

Releasing on labels such as Sam Paganini’s JAM, Marcal has been turning heads for some years now with regular support from iconic names like Len Faki, Adam Beyer, Charlotte de Witte, and more. Adding Radio Slave to that list, Marcal now joins Rekids Special Projects with arguably his most exceptional release to date.

‘Ainozama’ opens the package with pace as banging drums, offbeat clicks and a murky low-end lay the foundation for rave inspired screeches. ‘Cherry On Top’ is next with its metallic synths, pitter-patter percussion and scintillating atmospherics, leading into the relentless and undulating groove of ‘Heart Race’ which comes complete with sci-fi inspired bleeps. The final two tracks on the package see Marcal collaborate: firstly with Andc and Gabal on the high-octane, hypnotic and squelchy ‘Estado de Transe’; before Marcal teams up with Hosben for the twisted and rattling ‘Renoir’.

DC231_Layton_Giordani

Layton Giordani ‘New Generation’

Artist: Layton Giordani
Title: New Generation
Label: Drumcode
Cat. #: DC231
Release date: 21 September, 2020

Layton Giordani crafts his most accomplished work to date with ‘New Generation’, his second album on Drumcode.
Since 2017’s critically acclaimed debut album ‘Where It Begins’, the New Yorker has entrenched himself as one of the label’s most vital artists and leader of techno’s new school brigade. At just 27, he’s collaborated with Adam Beyer and Green Velvet on multiple occasions, linked with the legendary Danny Tenaglia for the now-classic ‘Live Again’ and played everywhere from Awakenings, Melt! Festival and Warehouse Project. He’s also lived the Transatlantic life more than most, splitting his time between the Big Apple and Amsterdam, absorbing influences from across the electronic spectrum.

It’s these experiences that inform ‘New Generation’, a masterclass of techno futurism and glistening example of Giordani’s ever-developing talents as a producer. Opening with the shimmering soundscapes of ‘Shinjuku’, a beatless two-and-a-half-minute mood setter, the album swings between timeless multi-faceted dancefloor weapons, and more lilting, ambient techno cuts rips for the golden hour.

Already a favourite of the Drumcode faithful, the album’s title track hits with a swarm of synapse- searing synths that saw it go down a treat at Awakenings Festival, Tomorrowland and Gashouder in the second half of 2019. ‘System Majority’ balances atmosphere and propulsive rhythms on a knife’s edge and featured in Beyer’s DCR 515 radio show. Giordani reunites with the legendary Green Velvet for ‘Life Lesson’, a pulsating roller, which notably features the young New Yorker’s hypnotic vocals on loop. Teaming with friend and fellow East Coaster Avision, ‘Power’ is punchy techno at its finest, driven by energetic stabs and a stirring vocal from Chicago journeyman Cevin Fisher. After playing b2b a string of times, Layton links with good friend Bart Skils for a maiden collaborative track. Driven by a strong melodic lead, ‘Midnight Magic’ typified the moment when the duo played it at Drumcode’s Awakenings event during ADE last year. ‘Feel A Vibe’ is an album highlight centered around plump bass, reverb-heavy sonics, distorted bleeps and a spoken word vocal, which begs for a peak-time rinse.

Elsewhere Giordani demonstrates his breadth with cuts such as ‘Nirvana X’, a lush breakbeat-laden cut; the laser-kissed ‘Translation Lost’, where his musicality is in full view and the progressive-tinged ‘Memory Fragment’, which reinforces the expansive Drumcode sound palette. The beautiful ‘Human Error’ closes out the work, as muffled horns, delicate keys and sparse bed of percussion unify for a momentous finale.

“This album is a summary of my life experiences up until this moment. Traveling around the world, living abroad, looking into the future and bringing atmosphere and textures from different places into my music. The evolution of music is a systematic cycle that never ends. It’s a composition of all matters experienced and visualized up until this very moment. From futuristic realms and ambiences, to city soundscapes within our reach; ‘New Generation’ is the future distilled into album form.” – Layton Giordani
