VillaHangar announces a new V/A ‘Underwater’, featuring a host of organic and melodic house gems from Double Drop, Deckert, Sound Shapes, Diass, Nina Simmons, Matizze, and Socko.

VillaHangar, founded in 2011 by Andrea Pellizzari and Matt Sawyer with support from Chris Leòn, operates between London and Milan, focusing on the finest in slick, laidback house. Having seen support from the likes of Solomun and Kollektiv Turmstrasse, VillaHangar’s music continues to conjure images of long journeys through breathtaking landscapes in the minds of listeners worldwide.

For ‘Underwater’, VillaHangar recruit a selection of artists for their debuts on the label. Aiming to give visibility and exposure to those involved, the release also nurtures the individual creativity of the artists, forming a supportive environment for full freedom of expression to flourish.

Kicking off the compilation is Double Drop’s ‘Nguvu’, a beautiful slice of tender house, before moving into Deckert’s emotive ‘Imposter the Syndrome’ with its reverberated vocals samples taking centre stage. Following on is the synth and string tinged ‘Tembour’ by Sound Shapes and the floaty, expressive ‘Mount Athos’ by Diass.

Nina Simmons slows down the pace with ‘Raksat’, with its exotic percussion and melodies carrying the track thematically into Matizze’s ‘Siddhartha’. Rounding off the release is Socko’s ‘Gamma’, a decidedly synthetic yet refined and delicate track.

Perfectly cementing its already established sound, ‘Underwater’ is a landmark release for VillaHangar. Offering a glimpse into the future of the label, the compilation stands as an exciting sign of things to come.

James Welsh ‘Pan/Sink’

Artist: James Welsh
Title: Pan/Sink
Label: Phantasy Sound
Cat. #: PH99
Format: Vinyl/Digital
Release Date: 16th October 2020
Tracklist:
1. Pan
2. Sink

Phantasy approaches it’s landmark hundredth-single release with another impactful single from one of the label’s key artists, James Welsh. Regularly played by producers from Midland to Charlotte De Witte, Welsh’s masterfully dense take on techno and electronica reaches new complexities on ‘Pan’, without ever-sacrificing his singular industrial groove.

The title track is a tunneling electroid roller layered informed by complex conversations seemingly taking place between man, machine, ghostly human speech and a veritable wind tunnel of noise. Perhaps Welsh’s finest connection yet between the blissful and the ruthless, ‘Pan’ demands submission.

On ‘Sink’, Welsh builds yet another perfectly-executed club weapon around an imaginative spoken-word sample, loosening up the tension of it’s more severe partner with a lucid and rhythmic trail of wide-eyed electro.

Bart Skils ‘My Rules’

Artist: Bart Skils
Title: My Rules
Cat. #: TRUE12132
Label: Truesoul
Release Date: October 19th 2020
Format: Digital
Tracklist:
1. My Rules
2. Cruising Waves

Returning after a six-month break, Truesoul delivers a pair of uplifting cuts from Bart Skils, marking his debut on Drumcode’s little brother imprint.

One of Drumcode most consistent contributors, Bart Skils also knows his way around a melodic lead better than most. With this is in mind, it’s difficult to believe this is the first sighting we’ve had of the Dutchman’s productions on Truesoul.

‘My Rules’ was created during lockdown with the specific intent to brighten the lives of the techno faithful. Both compositions were inspired by the type of tracks Skils would typically use to build his sets during longer sessions, when tension-and-release dynamics are deployed with aplomb. The title track comprises a wiggly bassline running alongside a skilfully arranged vocal hook, while tiny flashes of melody amplify the atmosphere. ‘Cruising Waves’ is marked by a hypnotic groove and a meditative vocal loop before a ball-tearing industrial synth-line rips through the bottom end at regular intervals throughout the second half of the piece.

Marcellus Pittman, Nas1 are finally back on Bosconi Extra Virgin with a new album titled Polaris Time.
It’s a multi coloured sonic adventure, moving from their hip hop and detroit house roots to a new palette of sounds including afro percussions and fresher synth lines blended together into a unique electronic soundscape that creates exotic, psychedelic atmospheres and unconventional, raw midtempo dance-floor tracks.
The Album begins with the enchanting ballad of “L’ isola di Serie B” , moving deeper with the spaced out vibe of Domino Skii , landing on the more tropical and frivolous scenarios of “Cicci Briucci” and on the laid-back interlude of “Il Sangue Non Serve A Niente”.
In the beginning of the flip side appears instead the jazzy and uplifting first cut named “Frigo Deca”, followed by the freaky jam of “Come Thru” and the adventurous balearic tune “Hector Savage” ending with the ethereal closing skit “Il Sangue Non Serve A Niente (outro)”
Fans of Kyle Hall, Theo Parrish as well as John Talabot or Nicola Cruz are warned, absolutely not to be missed if you have been following Nas1 music so far.

New York label toucan sounds announce label mainstay Brandon Markell Holmes’ ‘Museum of R&B (toucan sounds Edit)’.

Brandon Markell Holmes is a formally trained theatre actor, working within themes of social observation and the symbiotic relationship between art and history. He’s also a musician working his own art into history, having appeared on the Grammy-nominated Gorillaz album ‘Humanz’, as well as being featured in Afropunk for his visual EP ‘Inertia’.

His debut album ‘The Museum of R&B’ was originally released in conjunction with an immersive live experience at The Museum Of Contemporary Art in Chicago in 2019. Since then he has become a label mainstay at toucan sounds, collaborating with the likes of musclescars and Sweatnik. Fast forward to today, the label has repackaged the music from his debut, re-releasing it as a brand new album.

By taking samples from four different tracks off the original record, toucan sounds have utilized their multi-talented team of in-house producers to craft an entirely new dreamy slice of house, taking cues from jazz, soul, and the golden era of Chicago house to form a perfect cocoon around Brandon’s inspired vocal performances. Topping off the release, an equally lush instrumental version is included, highlighting both the musicianship of the original album as well as the edit skills of the toucan sounds crew.

Ion Ludwig ‘Truth Only Exists In Paradise’

Artist: Ion Ludwig
Title: Truth Only Exists In Paradise
Label: Adam’s Bite
Cat. #: ADAMLP001
Format: Vinyl & Digital
Release Date: 25th September 2020 (Vinyl) / 9th October 2020 (Digital)

Presenting the second entry to Adam’s Bite’s catalogue is none other than minimal maestro, Ion Ludwig with his eleven track album entitled ‘Truth Only Exists In Paradise.

A long-standing favourite amongst house aficionados and a good friend of the family, the Dutch artist provides eleven signature grooves, geared for communal and intimate experiences alike. His sixth full-length album on Swiss label Adam’s Bite is also his most expansive to date following recent long players on his own imprint Ugold Series and Baby Ford’s Trelik. Stretching across three records and sporting a 90 minute runtime, the project shines a light on all sides of Ion Ludwig’s creative perspective. Between reduced, dusty techno tracks and languorous melodic arrangements, ‘Truth Only Exists In Paradise’ carefully explores both mental and physical aspects of Ludwig’s craft. It wears its influences on its sleeve: referencing free-spirited outlooks from jazz and trip hop to New York’s house legacy, Ion Ludwig applies his delicate touch to the aesthetic without compromising in either direction. The result is as rewarding and personal as it is simple—a prime hallmark of every rich piece of minimalist music.

‘Truth Only Exists in Paradise’ tells the truth of non-truth. Nothing today can be seen as independent and no information seems to be holy. The truth is a hopeless lost soul, nowhere welcome or at home except in paradise’. Ion Ludwig

‘Il Pleure Rythmique’ begins with shimmering rhythms above eccentric samples and angelic pads dripping with euphoria before ‘Erodyca Melouse’ offers up rubbery synths, pulsating bass rolls and glistening leads underneath which follows suit in ‘Green Times’ adding quirky elements into the mix. ‘Faster Five Physics’ delivers skippy grooves, minimal aesthetics and seductive low frequencies in this late night dancefloor burner whilst ‘IP Swing’ is a more meditative cut with low-slung drums, rich textures and explorative sonic atmospheres.

Jazzy broken beats, rough-edged modulations which harmonise graciously with the entrancing leads take the focus ‘S3K vs S1MK II’ before easing into the swaying house cut that is ‘Think Music’ which culminates the use of whirling bass strokes, irresistible undulating melodies and elongated acid slurs layered underneath. ‘Going O’ and ‘Soul Vaseline’ make way for two jacking deep house cuts with a touch of sultriness, crystal-clean progression and murmuring wobble bass until flowing into ‘D-room’ which coasts on gratifying chord swells peppered with lively melodic waves and breezy oscillations. ‘Kronkolonie’ then delightfully rounds off this impressive album highlighting Ludwig’s dexterous skill with patiently, enveloping builds, bumping percussion and flourishing instrumentation.

Butane & Riko Forinson ‘In Concert (Volume Two)’

Title: In Concert (Volume Two)
Label: Extrasketch
Cat. #: EX22
Format: Digital
Release Date: 2nd October 2020
Tracklist

  1. Fuzzy
  2. Morning Sun
  3. Feel

Butane and Riko Forinson deliver the second instalment of their two-part ‘In Concert’ series on Extrasketch.

Fresh off their first instalment released via Extrasketch in mid-September, ‘In Concert Volume Two’ sees label head Andrew Rasse, aka Butane, and Italian DJ and producer Riko Forinson continue their thriving studio partnership as they unveil the second EP in the series to open October. Picking up right where they left off, the second half of their seven-track project delivers three productions spanning both house and minimal territories and putting a bow on the musically rich mini album.

The slow-blooming and entrancing ‘Fuzzy’ opens the package as the two studio talents go to work combining rolling organic drum rhythms and groove-heavy sub-bass, to offer up a hazy yet driving opener. ‘Morning Sun’ ups the energy with warping vocal chants and calls alongside a punchy kick and rubbery synths, reminiscent of a long-lost morning in the Ibiza sunshine. To close, Rasse and Forinson strip things back down on ‘Feel’, fusing a slick medley of dubby pads, further refined percussion arrangements and hypnotic vocals throughout the final cut – wrapping up the series in typically impressive fashion.
