Russian artist Maple Syrup’s ’180’ gets things rolling with a smooth, house roller featuring gentle keys and laid-back grooves before South London’s Blo who has releases on Piff Records and Strictly Flava continues with minimal track, ‘Consciousness’, that features shimmering low-end and dazzling, skippy rhythms. LA based Evade Robots is up next with ‘In Too Deep’ – a lo-fi cut with muffled yet vibrant drums and alleviating pads in the distance whilst Eli Cash lays down electro-styled flavours, spacey electronics and ethereal atmospheres on his ‘O.R.C.A’ track. Of Paradise artist Orthographic Figure’s ‘Outside Path’ features lusciously deep house moods with the spirit of Larry Heard’s spaced out late-night undertones until U Don’t Dance boss HeartWerk drops an effervescent, jackin’ cut with rattling percussion and fluttering synths.

Moving swiftly into the pulsating ‘Deep Steppin’ by the producer behind Azealia Banks ‘The Big Big Beat’, An Expresso, breaky drums spiral around the glistening melodies and punchy low frequencies. Resident DJ for LA party 900 Block and Fantastic Voyage artist, Seay offers up an enticing track entitled ‘We Could Be’ with alluring keys and compelling high-pitch vocals before Cool Contest affiliate and Noni and young cat Nasaneiru both throw down energetic groovers with soulful instrumentation and high-octane percussion. Slim Steve who has releases on labels like Let’s Play House and Cactus Traxx gives light to the acid fueled ‘Vibe’ with 303 synths, sweeping pads, and lively beats that oozes style. French artist and Hopera Records signee Hyas’ brings the tone down on ‘What’, for a breakbeat roller delightfully peppered with dreamy leads and hazy chords. Brazilian duo Albin & Nørus then round off this stunning compilation with a tranquil finisher entitled ‘Deep In My Soul’ with lulling pads riding underneath the tough breaky rhythms fused delightfully with playful melodies that evolve gracefully till the end.

Cat. #: ER034
Format: vinyl, digital
Release Date: 21st December 2020

  3. Ken Ishii – Bionic Jellyfish – (Luca Morris & Mozzy Rekorder remix)

Electropical Records welcomes a legend to the label for this forward looking new single from Ken Ishii which comes with remixes by Drunken Kong and Luca Morris & Mozzy Rekorder.

Ken Ishii is a legendary artist who debuted on R&S in the nineties and has remained an ever present musical force. He can do seminal and artful albums like Jelly Tones as well as visceral club 12″s and also produces music for films, runs his own label, 70 Drums and in normal times is a frequent headliner at all of Europe’s finest clubs.

Here he serves up ‘Bionic Jellyfish’, seven intense minutes of deeply involving techno. The booming kicks bring the powerful groove while the synths are wispy, neon and fluid as they dart around the mix. This is all consuming, warm and welcoming techno with plenty of hi fidelity details that submerge you in sound.

Remixers Drunken Kong is a project from prominent Tokyo pair D. Singh and DJ Kyoto who have been together since 2010. The mighty likes of Terminal M, Tronic and Unity have put out their hard hitting techno and here they take no prisoners. Their excellent remix gurgles and bubbles with acid menace as the hulking great kick drums rumble along and rattle your ribs.

Last but not least, another techno mainstay, Beatport chart topper and Electropical regular Luca Morris hooks up with fellow Italian Mozzy Rekorder, who has achieved similar heights with his straight up techno goodness on labels like 100%. Together they flip ‘Bionic Jellyfish’ into an urgent techno banger with pulsing sonar melodies and bigs walls of synth that arrest your every sense.

This is no frills but characterful techno from this evergreen label.

SONNS & The Mole _ Space Machine _ Art

SONNS & The Mole ‘Space Machine’

Artist: SONNS & The Mole ft. Gonzalo Torres Sr.
Title: Space Machine
Label: Machine Limited
Cat. #: ML011
Format: Digital
Release Date: 18th December
Tracklist:
01 Space Machine
02 Space Machine Dub
03 Tropic (feat. Gonzalo Torres Sr.)

Legendary Canadian producer The Mole teams up with Los Angeles’ SONNS for ‘Space Machine’ on Machine Limited this December.

‘Space Machine’, a three-track excursion into mid-tempo, disco-inflected house is the result of two days of creativity from The Mole and SONNS in the latter’s L.A. studio, marking their first collaboration as well as The Mole’s debut for the label owned by SONNS and Travis Kirschbaum (Split Secs, Warehouse Preservation Society).

The title track opens the release with almost-there vocals riding atop marching drums and a guttural, languid bassline. As the track progresses it ebbs and flows, constantly shifting and evolving towards a conclusion doused in a haze of dreamy pads and chords. ‘Space Machine Dub’ turns inwards, applying a clinical smattering of delays and reducing elements from the original into the quintessential dub form.

On closer ‘Tropic’, Gonzalo Torres Sr. provides percussive depth to SONNS & The Mole’s laidback but detailed and decidedly funky production which marries a powerful sense of groove with heady musicality.

Capturing the best of the organic and mechanical while showcasing the spirit of collaboration via something that feels like a genuine ‘jam’, ‘Space Machine’ is released on Machine Limited on 18th December and features artworks by Jamie Paton of Cage & Aviary.

Ben Men ‘Pequetita’

Artist: Ben Men
Title: Pequetita
Label: BTRAX records
Cat. #: BTX017
Release Date: 18th December 2020
Tracklist;.
1. Pequetita
2. Pequetita (DJ Mau Mau remix)
3. Pequetita (Anderson Noise remix)
4. Pequetita (Mumbaata remix)

Ben Men returns to BTRAX Records for his fourth EP, this time with standout remixes from Anderson Noise, DJ Mau Mau and Mumbaata making it another essential package.

Ben Men is a multifaceted artist, DJ, promoter and record dealer who has been shaping the French electronic scene since the early 90s. He has hosted parties under the BTRAX name at the legendary Rex Club, has signed artists like Scan 7 from Detroit, Vince Watson and Mr C, heads up the 45RDB label with a focus on Chicago sounds and has runs various record stores in his time. He brings all this experience and knowledge to his own music and says ‘Pequetita’ is dedicated to the street that houses Paulista Lov.E Club & Lounge in São Paulo Brasil. A first tribute was made in 2004 with the LOV.E CLUB EP produced by DJ Mau Mau and remixed by Mr. C, and now Mau Mau returns with Brazilian countrymen Anderson Noise and Mumbaata for hot and tropical remixes.

The superb ‘Pequetita’ is an airy and bright house track with plenty of exotic synth and percussive sounds. The deep beats roll on, bird calls and other atmospheric samples add rich detail and there is a lushness to the melodies that make it all the more escapist and high class.

Sao Paolo’s Mau Mau is one of the pioneers of electronic music in Brazil, was the resident DJ at Sra. Krawitz club and Hell’s Club, and has an individual house and techno style mixed with Brazilian beats and swing. His remix is a lively one with bouncing beats and busier synths, making it perfect for more energetic moments in the party.

The career of DJ and producer Anderson Noise coincides with the birth and explosions of the Brazilian electronic scene. Active since 1988 he’s put out more than 100 singles and EPs and overseen more than 100 releases on his own record label Noise Music that celebrated its 20th year in April 2019. His remix flips the track into something dark and more stripped back, with spooky chords and minimal beats locking you into a state of deep techno hypnosis.

Lastly, The Mumbaata duo, consisting of Lennox Hortale and Pedro Poyart, quickly became one of the most respected projects in the Brazilian dance music scene thanks to music on Get Physical, Dear Deer and D Edge. Their remix is a perfectly heady one with long tailed pads and late night chords all bringing warmth and soul.

This is a colourful and charismatic EP that brings a whole new world of freshness to the dance floor. Tracklist:

An artist at the heart of Tel Aviv’s blossoming house and techno scene, Stephan Bazbaz continues to showcase his skills as one of the city’s leading lights within electronic music. With releases and remixes via the likes of Djebali, hedZup and INFUSE in 2020 alone, he now closes out a fruitful twelve months with an impressive label debut via FUSE imprint LOCUS to deliver three fresh cuts in the form of his ‘Voyage EP’ – whilst INFUSE regular and LOCUS alumni Casey Spillman makes a swift return to step up on remix duties.

A low-slung and moody effort from the off, opening cut ‘300’ combines swinging percussion and icy hats whilst escalating synths and rumbling sub-bass take hold and transport the production firmly into the peak hours – unsurprisingly featuring as a stand-out track within Enzo’s sets over the past 12 months. Next up, ‘Key To Success’ offers up a groove-heavy roller, with tracky drums guiding off-kilter samples and rich piano flourishes throughout, whilst Casey Spillman’s interpretation ups the energy levels as he works punchy kicks, warping synths and menacing low-end tones to turn in a bustling remix. To close, ‘The Life’ showcases yet another side of Bazbaz’s vast production skills, opting for hazy synths and dreamy chords to round out proceedings in impressive fashion.

Maximilien ‘De Virginie’

Artist: Maximilien
Title: De Virginie
Label: Sapiens
Cat. #: Sapiens048
Release Date: 4th December 2020
Tracklist
1) Deamon
2) Gravity
3) Deus
4) Guide
5) Nino
6) Space
7) Virgo
Maximilien, from Bretagne in France, follows a previous release on Kitsuné and a single titled ‘Ravi’ on Agoria’s Sapiens’ ReGeneration Day II in October, returning with a full solo debut on Sapiens label with ‘De Virgine’ this November. Having taken considerable inspiration from the likes of Justice, Daft Punk and SebastiAn, his sound now stands unique, encapsulating an avant-garde vibe.

The Frenchman has a soft spot for classical music as well as electro, pop and ambient that makes his music a fine fusion of rich harmonies and rugged club-ready beats. He has a real mastery of his analogue synths and always opens a door onto a parallel universe with his evocative and emotional sounds.
He kicks off with the lush, deep and dreamy late night sounds of ‘Deamon’ with its smooth pads and angelic vocals next to heartfelt piano chords. ‘Deus’ has bright synths dangling above an airy groove that has more heavenly vocals adding layers of emotion. ‘Gravity’ pairs gorgeous classical piano with supple arps that drift next to a bright lead which eventually erupts and causes melodic rain to fall.
Guide keeps melodies front and centre with blissful ambiance and delicate male vocals making for a clean, pure track that takes your mind away from there and now. After Nino with its slow motion broken beats and reflective melodies breaking through the clouds from above comes Space, with many layers of rich synth and piano and a vocodered vocal that hints to a subtle sense of a Daft Punk vibe. The trip closes with Virgo, an electronic lullaby that lurches on big, bold drums and twinkling pads.
This is a superbly crafted, richly detailed and masterfully melodic release from Maximilien, an incredible first release to come to fruition on Sapiens.
