BTRAX label boss Rob Malone returns to the imprint this March for the release of ‘Bravery’, backed by remixes from Thomas Barnett and Orlando Voorn.

DJ, producer and BTRAX Records co-founder Rob Malone is a long-standing player within the electronic music scene. This Parisian native has hosted label parties at the famous Rex Club since 2001, welcoming fellow French and international artists to the stage including Extrawelt, Etapp Kyle, Steve Rachmad and Gregor Tresher, whilst holding a residency at Nouveau Casino for nearly seven years.

His latest offering includes two remixes, one from Visillusion Records head honcho Thomas Barnett, the other from highly respected producer Orlando Voorn. Thomas helped establish the legendary sound of Detroit Techno with his productions dating back to the 1980s. His music has appeared in commercials, movies and on top labels including Nova Mute. Orlando Voorn has also contributed between Detroit and Amsterdam’s techno scene. He has released material via Kevin Saunderson’s KMS and has collaborated with Juan Atkins and Blake Baxter.

The record opens with ‘Bravery’, fusing hard-hitting drums, atmospheric pads and sinister sonics to deliver an extremely captivating production. Thomas Barnett’s interpretation combines dubby chords with menacing expressions and the original’s weighty low frequencies, whilst ‘Exit D’ lays down dynamic synths, echoing soundscapes and atmospheric builds that transport listeners to another dimension. Orlando Voorn’s remix rounds out proceedings with blissful strings, distorted elements and light acidic tones on his ‘High Tech Soul’ remix, contributing to the package’s capricious vibe.

Buenos Aires’ Juan Hansen lands on Bedouin’s Human By Default this March with his ‘Telling Me Something’ EP.

Opening with a dose of organic percussion and a plodding bassline, title track ‘Telling Me Something’ whirs through a series of delectable analogue tweaks, followed by the irrepressible ‘Kulú’ which brings pounding kick drums and zany effects around warped vocals and chugging low end for energetic crowds.

On ‘Cuatro Bajos’ Hansen delivers delicate, memorable melodies over crisp drum patterns which unfurl across the track’s duration, while ‘Buenos Aires’ sees Hansen team up with percussionist Martin Rizzola, with the duo’s styles gelling effortlessly as Rizzola’s bouncing, lively percussion aligns flawlessly across the crystal clear production.

Teakup ‘Sips Tea’

Artist: Teakup
Title:  Sips Tea
Label: HOMAGE
Cat. #: HOMAGE012
Format: Digital
Release Date: 12th March 2021
Tracklist:
01 Buckwheat (The Body Knows)
02 Evaporate
03 Ice Cream Spork
04 What
05 This Version
06 Diphthong

HOMAGE recruit Ohio’s Teakup for ‘Sips Tea’, a six track EP packed to the brim with off-kilter house tracks.

Previously appearing on Titonton Duvante’s Residual Recordings and Tony Fairchild’s is / was, the Midwest DJ/producer Teakup turns his sights to HOMAGE, turning in a set of exceptional wonky, Perlon-esque house for his debut appearance on the Brooklyn-based imprint.

Across the six tracks, Teakup’s knack for crafting irresistibly weird house music is on full display, covering a variety of moods and styles throughout. Lead track ‘Buckwheat (The Body Knows)’ sees restrained chords drawn out across a skippy, textured beat peppered with plucky synths before moving into ‘Evaporate’, in which fluttering percussion and bouncing bass takes the forefront.

Delving into headsier territory, ‘Ice Cream Spork’ makes a beeline for the after hours, as glitched out synthesis and visceral low end carry the track deep into the night. The monstrous ‘What’ follows suit with bubbling FX and twisted bass shuffling through a restrained and considered arrangement. Drawing on dub sensibilities and vocal samples, ‘This Version’ follows, and ‘Diphthong’ round out the release in fine style with another dose of stripped-back, glitchy gold.

Since 2017, HOMAGE have remained a go-to imprint for upfront party sounds. Run by House Of Yes residents Ryan Clover & Fabi Jugo, the label has released music from the likes of Cinthie, Kettama, Ben Gomori, and JVXTA. Showing no signs of slowing down in 2021, the label adds another string to their bow with Teakup’s striking EP.

Josh Butler ‘Switch It EP’

Artist: Josh Butler
Title: Switch It EP
Label: MÜSE
Cat. #: MUSE021
Format: Digital
Release Date: 5th March 2021
Tracklist

  1. Switch It
  2. Addis

Josh Butler heads to MÜSE this March as he reveals his latest two-tracker, ‘Switch It’.

One of modern house music’s leading names, ORIGINS RCRDS boss Josh Butler continues to push and evolve his trademark take on the genre with the past twelve months welcoming more melodic tinges and atmospheric shades to his sound palette. Currently based in New Zealand, a place where he spent a significant part of his childhood, Josh started the New Year featuring as one of the world’s only internationally touring artists, playing a string of club shows and festivals across the country. This unique situation, coupled with an impressive work ethic in the studio during lockdown, has led to an exciting start to 2021 for the multifaceted DJ, producer, and label boss – with early-March welcoming his debut appearance on Dennis Cruz & Eddy M’s MÜSE imprint as he reveals his two-track ‘Switch It’ EP.

A slinking production guided by crisp, organic percussion licks, tripped out vocals, and aquatic stabs, title cut ‘Switch It’ perfectly demonstrates this evolution in sound as Butler reveals yet another infectious peak-time production to add to his rich catalogue. On the flip, ‘Addis’ takes things down a meandering, warping path as rich synths and sweeping leads meet further signature drum work to wrap things up in style.
