Label: Blaufield Music

Release Date: 12th November 2021

Live artists, producers and label bosses who continue to evolve and adapt, 2021’s pause in touring saw Booka Shade return to the studio to deliver an array of productions spanning the melodic house and techno sphere. Having started the year with a string of collaborations alongside renowned vocalists and songwriters such as Polly Scattergood, before partnering with international producers including Bontan, SOHMI, and Felix Raphael, Autumn welcomes a shift back towards their origins as they ready their latest LP, ‘Both’. An eleven-track album set for release via the duo’s home Blaufield Music on 12th November, ‘Both’ sees the legendary duo return to what they love most, creating trademark club-ready productions made just in time for the re-opening festivals, nightclubs, and venues across the globe.

“We haven’t been able to tour across the past year and a half for obvious reasons, so naturally, we both spent a lot of time in the studio producing music. After a phase of collaborations with vocalists earlier in the year, released as ‘Voices Of Hope’, we felt it was time to focus on the instrumental and atmospheric signature Booka Shade sound again. Just the two of us in the studio. The album and project turned out to be quite clubby, which emphasises our hope for the celebratory return of club culture and live music.” – Booka Shade

Combining a wealth of unreleased material alongside a selection of recent highlights from their catalogue, ‘Both’ welcomes a marriage of soundscapes familiar to fans of the duo’s club-driven, atmospheric and impactful sound. From entrancing tracks such as LP opener ‘Caprice’, ‘Call Morpheus’ and the epic ‘Essential Chrome’ which fuse soaring melodies with captivating vocals, through to tracks such as ‘Drago’, ‘Inner City Incident’ and ‘1993’ where brooding melodies come to the fore, the LP balances light and dark to offer up an eleven-track representation of the current ‘Booka Shade sound’ – one perfectly suited to big dancefloor moments amongst late-night hours.

2. Mouse in Trap

Luca Draccar shows off his artistic take on melodic techno with three new standout tracks.

Draccar is a Berlin-based artist with Italian roots and has long been devoted to techno. He crafts conceptual EPs that delve into thoughtful topics and convey real meaning on the dance floor. He has a wide range of skills that take in mesmerizing, trance-like sounds, futuristic bass lines and hallucinatory layers of synth. Next to widespread press coverage, Draccar has been supported by tastemakers such as Maceo Plex, Carl Craig and Âme.

He opens up this fresh new EP with ‘Margot,’ which layers up elegant synth swirls with sleek, strident techno drums. The percussion is icy cold while the bass is warm and the track slowly takes over you like a rush of euphoria. There is more unique techno artistry in ‘Mouse in Trap’ with its darkened bass and shady vocal sounds. They take you to a world of mystery where bright chords add rays of hope. Superb closer ‘The Black White Palm’ is another scintillating track of clean, serene techno with real melodies and an alluring balance of light and dark.

These are three deeply involving, meticulously well-crafted tracks from the assured studio craftsman.

Holldën ‘Malpractice EP’

Artist: Holldën
Title: Malpractice EP
Label: Second State
Cat. #: SNDST097
Release Date: 5-11-2021
Tracklist:

  1. Slacker
  2. Physical Provider
  3. Dandelion Mine
  4. Garotte

Portuguese producer Holldën returns to Second State with “Malpractice” EP, a dynamic and texturized 4 track record.

Kuiper Noise founder Holldën presents “Malpractice” EP on Second State. The Portuguese export delivers a whirlwind of crunching, evocative techno with this record, following his stand-out contribution to the label’s most recent VA compilation with track “Myosotis”.

Launching the record with breakneck speed is “Slacker”. This chaotic high energy opener employs furious precision with relentless cymbals and snare drums. The hectic mood that’s created delves deep with a pummeling kick drum and a dense, malevolent baseline. Synth keys sway and push from one minor key to another, building a deep and dark energy.

Next up is “Physical Provider”, a track that continues with the same level of energy and gusto as its predecessor. A heavily distorted vocal sample that is pushed beyond any discernible recognition plays a vital rhythmic role, intertwined with the kick drum and hi-hat combination. Slowly, a devilish baseline is drawn in, adding even more weight. Melodic keys jolt between the percussion and fall gracefully into the arms of the long, yearning major notes towards the close.

Following is the atmospheric cut “Dandelion Mine”. Endlessly deep sonics greet us from the jump, swirling nimbly around the thumping kick drum and off-kilter synth notes, that make this an ultimate techno roller. Razor sharp cymbals ring out and send you into a frenzy amongst the snares drum and a jet black baseline. A brief moment of serenity is found when the percussion is stripped away, but is soon lost as the full weight of the track is brought down upon you again.

Closing out proceedings is “Garrote”, with off-center, minor keys, it is as perfectly unusual as it is effective. The percussion leaves nothing to the imagination as the full force of Holldën’s production is brought out on show. Explosive kick drums, hi-hats, and snare drums drive you on, while pairing effortlessly with the trippy melody. A deep baseline brings with it an unnerving anxious feeling that calls you to the dance.

Tracklist:
Leeu & Lemonella – Star Sailor

Leeu – Dream Control

The next release, scheduled for 24 November 2021, is the result of a long artistic reflection based on the dreams of Alexander Coetzee, alias LEEU, DJ and producer from Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Dream Control album is an introspective musical masterpiece about the universal mystery that every human being lives through, their dreams. To those moments when you cannot decide if it is infact a dream or reality and the freedom one feels when lucid dreaming. Divided into 3 chapters, this album approaches by a first EP the paradoxical dream, then by second EP the waking dream and finally by a complete reading through an album to be released on March 1, 2022.

For this first chapter, LEEU was surrounded by artists from South Africa including Lemonella, a poetess with a melancholy and acidulous tone, Lover Buffet, a committed genre visual artist and poet living in Berlin, and Thor Rixon, a multiinstrumentalist, producer and actor from Cape Town.

This album will be the subject of a double album vinyl release and a live concert on Saturday, July 2, 2022 for the 15th edition of the Festival Week-end au bord de l’eau in Sierre, Switzerland.

Monobox ‘Regenerate’

Artist: Monobox
Title: Regenerate
Label: M-Plant
Cat. #: M.PM040
Format: Double vinyl / digital
Release Date: 26 November 2021
Tracklist:
A1. Rise
A2. Blackwater Canal
B1. Wargames
B2. Angel City
C1. Exoplanet
D1. Drydock
D2. Regenerate

Following Robert Hood’s announcement in October detailing the return of his Monobox alias and the ‘Forwardbase Kodai EP’ comprising two exclusive tracks and two remixes from himself and Ø [Phase], he now delivers the full Monobox regeneration across an album featuring seven more tracks.

Originally launched in 1996 Hood’s Monobox sound spanned a trio of EPs on his own M-Plant label, culminating in more releases including the ‘Molecule’ album (in 2003) for French label Logistic, which later spawned a series of remixes including those of Ricardo Villalobos and Matthew Dear. A brief return came in 2014 as part of M-Plant’s 20th anniversary celebrations, which saw the release of a new Monobox 12″, ‘Film / Rectangle’. Speaking to RBMA that year for one of their Fireside Chat interviews, Robert said: “Monobox was an alien project. I read this book when I was probably around 13 or 14. It was this ominous black box that came from some other universe, and it was just sort of hovering over the planet, over a cornfield somewhere.” For the return of Monobox, Hood has envisaged that the vessel has been lying dormant for 40 or 50 years and is now beginning to rise up again, or regenerate.

The new Monobox album, ‘Regenerate’ creates an all-enveloping story from its opening chapter and the atmospheric ‘Rise’. Stripped-back tribalism ensues with ‘Blackwater Canal’ before the ominous ‘Wargames’, while ‘Angel City’ brings a lighter, sparkling touch. Disc two delivers the gritty ‘Exoplanet’ running at over nine minutes as it gradually draws you in, then flip over for the sweeping grooves of ‘Drydock’. The album closes on the album’s title track where vintage melodies sit alongside techno futurism.

‘Regenerate’ will be released across double vinyl and digital from 26 November.
