ION-2022-STAGE-SPLITS-POSTER-(FINAL)

ION Festival 2022

Address:
Dhërmi, Albania

Dates:
7th – 14th September 2022

ION is a different kind of music event, one where there are no festival fences. Ticket holders are pushed to explore as they please and create a pure holiday experience.

Set in an untouched part of the world on the outskirts of Europe, ION festival shares the same region of the Mediterranean as Corfu and Southeast Italy commanding 25°C weather in September. The first thing of note is the stunning Albanian coastline running along the Ionian Sea pressed against a pebbly beach and transparent ocean water taking up much of the festival site. The part that really adds to ION’s incredible setting is that it’s directly under the imposing green Ceraunian mountains that only adds to the scenic nature of the festival which feels totally cut off from the rest of the world.

Dotted throughout the festival playground will be a number of stages and experiences. Currently, there are five stages announced across the festival site with other experiences across the coastline, only accessible by boat. These will provide some of the most memorable moments of the week.

Jeff Gray, from ION says “When we are started to bring our vision for ION Festival to life, we wanted to make sure each music location had its own, unique vibe with a distinct music programme to match.

From the open-air hedonism of our Main Stage and The Deck, to the depths of The Bunker, the intimacy of The Cove, to The Yacht Club’s slick terrace, we feel we have fine-tuned our lineup with exceptional attention to detail. And that’s all before we get to the additional experiences that we know will provide some of the most incredible spots to experience electronic music anywhere in the world.

We hope you can all join us in this stunning location that we are extremely fortunate to call home this September.”

The Main Stage will be an open-air haven, a safe harbour set into a private cove. Lucky dancers can keep moving until the early hours when the warm sunrise spreads over the area.

The Bunker will be hidden away from prying eyes. The cavernous indoor space of blasted concrete pillars and the labyrinthine of passageways creates the more atmospheric buildings on the site.

The Deck is for those lazy cocktail-fueled days and balmy nights. This beachside stage is a spacious outdoor area in which to enjoy the music of those selectors who know how to soundtrack summer memories.

The Cove is an intimate, sandy paradise on the water’s edge. As the heat of the afternoon gives way to night-time hedonism, this stage transforms from a chilled-out sun trap to dance central.

Jutting over the Ionian is The Yacht Club, from its position on top of a rocky outcrop, festival-goers can dance into the early hours and enjoy the coast’s epic panorama view from this slick, modern terrace.

The team behind ION is no stranger to putting on a good party, best known for Junction 2 festival, the team at LWE has slowly risen through the ranks from club promoters to major festival event organisers. Now ION is the jewel in the crown bringing people from far and wide for one hedonistic week in a brand new location.

For everyone who chooses to come to ION on this extended summer party, it will be a week filled with new encounters and 3,000 like-minded friends, all soundtracked by electronic music’s best artists.

The title track “Silver Traces” is like a peaceful long walk. No hurry, no big stunts, no encounters or interruptions will break their fascinating steady flow of energy.

Their track “Lunacy” which you would imagine could stand for folly or foolery also carries that stern but laidback & calm motion Frasseck & Freitag are known for.

Format: Digital
Release Date: 28th January 2022

Arriving for his first release on Liebing’s recently re-launched CLR imprint, the BAU MUZIK boss delivers three electric techno bombs.

‘Lemon’ leads the pack, with tough FX swirling around hard-hitting and evolving percussion before ‘Terminal’ follows with its rough drums interplaying with booming low end, headsy textures, and bleeps. Closing out the release is ‘Command’, which takes a trippy approach with dense stereo work, hypnotic synth lines, and staccato basslines working in tandem with rolling kick drums and sizzling hats.

Liebing’s iconic CLR imprint, started in 1999, returned in 2021 after a five-year hiatus. Initially titled Chris Liebing Records until 2010, then Create Learn Realize until the break, and now Create Learn Repeat, CLR reemerged in the techno underground with releases from Liebing himself, followed by newcomer Frankie Bromley and upstarts Hertz Collision & Gene Richards Jr.

Late-night grit follows with the immersive delayed arpeggios of ‘Addictions’ while the detuning action ramps up on the title track, the heaviest here. Tense, hypnotic and pulsating, ‘No Stress’ rounds the hotly tipped producer’s EP out.

Having debuted on Symbolism via 2021’s Synchronicity compilation release as well as chalking up releases for Rekids offshoot RSPX and her own Chapter Records, Anika Kunst is fast becoming one of ‘proper’ Techno’s names to watch.

PACKSHOT Keecen - Call Me - Mellom

Keecen inaugurates the new Mellom label with an EP that features two new singles and a Henrik Villard remix. The first single arrives on February 4th, the second a week later, and the EP drops on February 25th.

Tromsø funk pioneer Keecen flips the frozen tundras of his homeland into super warm and slick house sounds. They come with proper piano melodies and soul samples, killer basslines and plenty of cosmic Scandi-magic. He works under various monikers on Mhost Likely, Full Pupp and Paper Recordings but now steps out on the newly minted Mellom.

Opener ‘Call Me’ is bubbly house funk of the highest order. The slinky drums and aching chords make a fine combo, while choice bass riffs and vocal yelps bring plenty of class to this most heart-warming gem. ‘Been Through’ has a deeper house vibe with tight, neat drums overlaid with yearning vocal samples that tug at the heartstrings. Add in the seductive chords, and you have a track rich in timeless emotion.

Remixer Henrik Villard is one of Norway’s most vital artists. He makes feel-good house music with lo-fi textures and groovy bass patterns on labels like Mhost Likely and Tooman. His superb remix is built on heavy house kicks that swing low, with balmy chords up top and subtle vocal sounds layering in the soul.

2. Luminous (Henrik Villard Remix)
3. Luminous (Keecen Remix)

Mhost Likely co-owner and Norwegian producer Gordon Joe debuts on Mhost Likely Green with a new single that includes remixes from Henrik Villard and Keecen.

Gordon Joe “seeks to collect the musical pollen from the lush ecosystem of Norway.” He has a background as a studio producer and an ear for intricate sound design. He has worked with singer/songwriter sensation Aurora and has recorded for Eskimo Recordings. Inspired by a pool of influences, including ambient, electro and house, he crafts music with a rich subtlety and variety of moods that are all demonstrated on his debut single for Mhost Likely.

The inspiration to make ‘Luminous’ came one summer morning when the artist flipped through clips from old anime TV series, making him nostalgic for a worry-free childhood. He says, “Gordon Joe is a personal project all about communicating my inner emotions through music. With ‘Luminous’ as my first original release, I can confidently say that this represents me and what I wish to pursue.

The excellent ‘Luminous’ is a captivating record that taps into an indie-electronica sphere, filled with a beautiful blend of dreamy melodies that spiral up to the heavens. They bring heart-tugging emotions that take you on an endlessly uplifting journey.

His version is a hazy slice of house music that evokes a feeling of hopefulness with shimmering vocals harking back to a classic era of UKG. Lastly, Keecen hails from the edge of the Arctic Circle and is paving a new path for Tromsø-based artists. The Nordic funk star releases under various aliases on Full Pupp, Beatservice and Paper Recordings and takes us on a Flume-esque trip through subtle and downtempo dreamscapes.

‘Luminous’ is a superb showcase of contemporary Scandinavian sounds.

Ian Pooley returns to Radio Slave’s Rekids with Studio A Pt. 2 this February.

The second entry in a three-part series of music based around his studio, Ian Pooley’s ‘Studio A Pt. 2’ for Radio Slave’s Rekids imprint sees the bonafide house legend deliver another choice selection of grooving hardware productions.

Leading the A-side is the fluttering synths and warped vocal samples of ‘JV Organ & Matrix’, which twists and turns through delightful FX and rumbling bass. ‘Version 2’ of the track follows, contorting elements of the original into a heads-down groover, with washed-out processing and stereo wizardry meeting classic dub techniques.

On the flip, ‘Back Up’ keeps it live and direct with hard-hitting, chunky drums and menacing acid lines, with an additional stripped back digital ‘Beats Bass’ version included. Rounding out the 12” is 101202, a dreamy slice of razor-sharp house, with gorgeous filtered pads drifting in tandem with strung out low end and skippy percussion.

Active since the early 90s, the German DJ/producer has released on the likes of Force Inc, V2 Records, and his own Pooledmusic, remixing for the likes of Deee-Lite, Carl Cox and many more, as well as being one of the few to be remixed by Daft Punk.
