Beatservice label regular Boblebad returns with their much anticipated new album ‘Rund i kantene’. Across eight magnificent tracks, he explores cross-dimensional funk, weird jazz and polyamorous house.

Boblebad, real name Ulf Moen Denneche, is a genuinely original creative and all-around production dynamo based in Oslo. He is equally adept at crafting immersive sonic textures as striking imagery and is a painter and visual artist as well as a producer. He debuted on this label last spring with ‘Vill Falafel’, and his powerfully individual music has also come on the likes of Eskimo, Full Pupp, Paper Recordings, and Aquavit Beat. Boblebad also plays the trombone for a cultured Afrobeat band and rousing, jazz-inspired big band. As such, he has deep musical roots and rich skills that all play out on this genre-defying new album.

Kosmische-informed crescendos define opener ‘Rund i Kantene’ before singles ‘Kald Fisk’ and ‘Syrebad’ demonstrate Boblebad’s iconoclastic yet fun-loving approach to beat-making. The superb ‘Syrebad’ is a propulsive big-room bomb, locked and loaded for high climactic impact with its lively mix of laser chimes, soft tapping drums and muscular subs from the depths. ‘Laminat’ offers brilliantly spooky boogie from outer-space whilst there are rugged EBM-referencing synths on ‘Tusker’ and ‘Havdans’ is a neck-snapping dark disco beat. Smokey, left-of-centre electronics feature on ‘Bred Last’ and closer ‘Funky Snegle’ is a wonky and elastic rhythm to send you off loose-limbed.

Boblebad breaks all the rules while serving high-class club functionality and plenty of musical charm on this exquisite debut album.

Now readying his first release for Moudaber’s MOOD, the Bolivian DJ/producer delivers two irresistible house tracks for the label. ‘Gottaget’ sees skippy, chunky drums combined with snaking low end and fluttering synths for a deeply grooving start to the EP. ‘XTC’ brings funky basslines, ethereal vocal chops, and evolving chords to form a track designed for hands-in-the-air moments on the dancefloor.

“I remember listening to Nicole Moudaber when I started leaning towards electronic music ten years ago and thought she was amazing and such a rockstar. When I found out several months ago that she was playing my music, I knew I had to make something for her label. I saw her for the first time playing in Miami, and her set that night inspired me to make these tracks while staying true to my minimal and groovy sound.” – Morpei

MM-RELEASES-EDIT

Marcal ‘Infectious EP’

Artist: Marcal
Title: Infectious EP
Label: Mind Medizin
Cat. #: MDZN004
Format: Digital
Release Date: 27th May 2022
Tracklist:
01 Infectious
02 Lambda Core

Lady Tazz’s Mind Medizin label welcomes Marcal for an adventurous new techno two-tracker.

Brazilian-born and based, Marcal has now reached a global audience with his spellbinding techno and haunting atmospherics. His intelligently designed sounds on labels like Rekids Special Projects have found favour with everyone from Charlotte de Witte to Richie Hawtin. He has built a local scene in his hometown of Goiânia and now lands on the forward-thinking Mind Medizin label.

Opener ‘Infectious’ is a mind-altering and wonky techno workout. The unbalanced synths warp and wrap around each other to dynamic effect, while oversized hi-hats ramp up the pressure. The drums hit hard and it results in supple, stylish and high impact backroom techno. The equally excellent ‘Lambda Core’ is more dark and glitchy, with scraping hits and scuffed-up kicks. The textured sound designs really bring this track alive as ghoulish vocals and hyposonic loops take you down a late-night techno tunnel.

This is a brilliant brace of muscular and emotive techno tunes.

Closer Orbit ‘Rave Things EP’

Artist: Closer Orbit
Title: Rave Things EP
Label: Motech Records
Cat. #: MT153
Format: Digital
Release Date: 17 June 2022
Tracklist:
1. Piano Track
2. State Of (I Still Believe)
3. Rave Things
4. Foldspace

Detroit’s Motech Records welcomes Nicolaas Black to the fold, as he unveils his newest project Closer Orbit with the ‘Rave Things EP’.

Nico has a long musical history, from his exposure to opera and classical at a young age to the experimental explosion in the 90s via artists like Front 242, KMFDM, 808 State, Nitzer Ebb and NIN. After attending his first illegal rave in Detroit, he learned to mix vinyl and the progression to a dancefloor aesthetic was sealed. His instinct led to a 6 year sojourn in Chicago, where he was fortunate to meet some of the seminal pioneers of house, and began assisting studio sessions at Slang Music Group – Frankie Knuckles, Paul Johnson, Joe Smooth, Ron Carroll, Craig Loftus and Vince Lawrence, amongst others. Later he worked for Mark Picchiotti at Blueplate Records, rounding out his 4-on-the-floor education. He also engineered a “Pigface” album for Martin Atkins of P.I.L. fame, solidifying his industrial roots.

Countless DJ sets, raves, festivals and recording sessions later, he is now based in Los Angeles and stays committed to the studio and impromptu surf missions. A consummate producer, under several monikers his music and sets bridge the width of the underground dance music spectrum, from Chicago to Detroit, Berlin to LA; from techno to electro, jazz to funky house, disco, acid, industrial and beyond. His reproduction of Fela Kuti’s ‘Zombie’ remains a seminal warehouse favourite and 2020’s ‘The Sun’ has to-date racked up well over a million plays on SoundCloud.

Priding himself on constant evolution and growth, he presents his Closer Orbit incarnation. ‘Rave Things EP’ releases on 17 June, and features 4 new tracks that draw from his many influences including the monster house opener ‘Piano Track’ and melodious ‘State Of (I Still Believe)’, to the Detroitesque ‘Rave Things,’ before the deep and synthy ‘Foldspace’ closes this varied and reflective EP.

HI-LO follows up his debut EP ‘Hypnos’ with a heavy dose of low-end funk as he reworks the title track retaining the original’s hypnotic bassline and building upon it to craft a beefed-up weapon. Fresh off her brilliant ‘We Control’ EP, Lilly Palmer launches ‘Take Me There’ into some serious brain-spangling territory as crunchy drums and a barrage of trippy synths send the track into orbit.

Dublin based ZOiD is the artist of choice here, the electronic and jazz musician showcasing his genre straining sound with two slick and innovative cuts, writing the narrative for the ‘Dexaphonic EP’. The transcending and otherworldly synths all converse in harmony around precise and intricately placed drum patterns. Hi-tek jazz for the tastemakers amongst us. TRUE12146

Fred Lenix & Dino Lenny ‘Motivator’

Artist: Fred Lenix & Dino Lenny
Title: Motivator
Label: Truesoul
Cat. #: TRUE12146
Release date: 6 May, 2022
Format: Digital

Future star Fred Lenix links with seasoned production ace Dino Lenny for a debut collaboration that signals the start of a well-matched union.

Firmly established with a stacked discography that reaches back to the ‘90s, Dino Lenny’s arsenal can be sourced across a myriad of prominent labels, making his Truesoul debut long-awaited. Fred Lenix, in turn, is still on a high after his triumphant maiden EP on Truesoul late last year, ‘Somewhere’. The future-facing release stood as a label highlight in 2021 and signalled the artist’s arrival as a promising force on Truesoul moving forward.

With Maceo Plex being an unwitting matchmaker in inviting them both onto Ellum Audio’s label sampler last year, the pair began swapping demos with frequent exchanges soon establishing that a tripped-out collaboration was on the cards.

Title track ‘Motivator’ is an evolving synth-driven dispatch loaded with a powerful, stabbing loop that blends with its robotic soundscape and creates a futuristic ambience. ‘Psycho Under Pressure’ cuts like a blistering raid through the cosmos as pulverising, climatic elements and distorted spoken word gives the duo’s laser-focused techno the space to impress.
