2. It Is So Easy

4. Underpass
5. Virtual Empathy
6. I Want To Know
7. Intro Robo
8. Simple Music

Long-time Italian electronic music pioneer Alexander Robotnick returns with a new album, ‘Simple Music’, this winter. Across eight tracks, he distils a lifetime of influences into fresh, forward-thinking disco cuts that bring a whole new vitality to the scene.

The legendary Robotnick (a nickname Maurizio Dami assumed in the 80s) is a towering name in Florentine music and someone who very much defined the early disco scene thanks to a superb run of enduring club cuts, not least his seminal ‘Problèmes D’amour’. Although he is now in his 70s, he is still kicking out essential jams. His music features plenty of the arpeggios that have always given his music its character, coming on labels like Permanent Vacation, Clone, Bordello a Parigi and Bosconi Records. Few artists understand analogue machines and dance floor mechanics like this man, as he proves once more with this, his eighth studio album.

The concept of ‘Simple Music’ is to craft tunes for any setting. It is about combining traditional music parts, chords, melodies and songs to make music that is varied and vibrant and constantly evolving. Says Alexander, “Riffs and grooves are not endless, and when you are my age, you may have heard them already. I am having more and more trouble finding interesting tracks for myself, so I felt the need to produce “simple” music that generates genuine feelings in a music scene that can be averse to risk.”

Seductive disco-house opener ‘Babel’ is about the difficulties of understanding each other, even if we speak the same language and culture. The vocoder vocals take centre stage next to lush chords, then ‘It Is So Easy’ has a smug character in the vocal refrain and a sneering attitude in the verses that is playful and characterful next to the rugged and punchy drum grooves. The brilliant ‘Why’ is built on elastic electro-disco and muses on a lover’s inconsistency, while the space disco of ‘Underpass’ is a dark vision of a late-night walk that channels the original Robotnick sound of the early 80s.

The heartbroken robot lullaby ‘Virtual Empathy’ is about “the empathic feelings induced by mainstream TV to manipulate mass consensus“, whilst ‘I Want To Know’ finds Robotnick describing his dreams and wondering about their meaning over funky bass twangs and serene disco sounds. Then comes the only instrumental ‘Intro-Robo’ with its multi-layered arpeggios and the magnificent title track, which captures the whole essence of the album with taught retro bass, icy hi-hats and stiff rhythms that will jerk any floor into action.

Simple Music is a masterclass once more from the studio wizard that is Alexander Robotnick.

PACKSHOT Zamal - Vague (incl. Raphael Schon, Peter Invasion & Gregor Habicht Remixes) - Freeride Millenium

Zamal ‘Vague’

Artist: Zamal
Title: Vague
Label: Freeride Millenium
Cat. #: FM031
Format: Digital
Release Date: 1st December 2022
Tracklist:
1. Zamal – Vague
2. Zamal – Moan
3. Zamal – Moving Air
4. Zamal – Vague (Raphael Schön Remix)
5. Zamal – Moving Air (Peter Invasion & Gregor Habicht Remix)

Zamal steps up with a debut EP for Freeride Millenium that marks the label’s most techno-leaning sounds to date. Remixes come from Raphael Schön and Peter Invasion & Gregor Habicht with artwork, as always, from Daniel Rajcsanyi.

Zamal calls himself a “military brat”, half US-American citizen born to a mother that served in the US Air Force branch of the military, he was finally stationed in Stuttgart’s barracks after many years of constant moving. His non conventional upbringing and love of underground electronic sounds has helped develop his own particular take on techno. To date, he has mostly self-released his raw and rugged DIY live sounds but has also contributed tracks to the Queer Base and Impact compilations on this label. He now makes a fine step up with his first full EP.

Opener ‘Vague’ is a quickened techno groove with drums that insist you get dancing. Clattering percussive sounds and icy hi hats bring the texture as warm chords add a real sense of dance floor rush. ‘Moan’ picks up the pace yet further with clipped, funky but fast drums laying down a tough groove that is softened by gorgeous ambient pads and meaningful chords. It’s soulful techno of the highest order. The superb ‘Moving Air’ is a more freaky and intense workout with dense melodic sequences looping over and over, their pixelated texture firing at your synapses whilst driving techno drums keep things on the move.

First to remix is Raphael Schön who also offered up a fresh cut for the IMPACT compilation. His version of ‘Vague’ goes deep and dubby with tunneling drums and sleek cosmic synths wrapping themselves around the wooden hits. Next up, RIOTVAN owner Peter Invasion joins forces once again with Gregor Habicht after previous outings on the likes of Correspondant and Live At Robert Johnson. Their remix of ‘Moving Air’ is another muscular one with chunky drums and slapping hits. It’s intense and loopy and sure to bring real rapture to the club.

Zamal’s Vauge EP explores fresh new techno sounds for Freeride Millenium.

Sisko Electrofanatik ‘Ametista’

Artist: Sisko Electrofanatik
Title: Ametista
Label: Terminal M
Cat. #: TERM218
Format: Digital, vinyl
Release Date: December 2nd 2022
Tracklist:
01. Ametista
02. Ametista (Tiger Stripes Remix)
03. Solar Rock

Monika Kruse’s record label Terminal M welcomes a hard-hitting techno EP from Sisko Electrofanatik, which also features a remix by Tiger Stripes.

Sisko Electrofanatik is an Italian artist who is making his Terminal M debut following numerous high-profile releases on other influential record labels such as Spartaque’s Codex, Markantonio’s AnalyticTrail, Carl Cox’s Intec and Alan Fitzpatrick’s We Are The Brave.

Based in Rome, Sisko Electrofanatik’s peak time style fuses enthralling synth lines with driving percussion to create peak time energy that is perfect for the dance floor. Many are also familiar with Sisko Electrofanatik’s own label Gain Records, which regularly features his own music along with many of techno’s most exciting new artists.

Each of the tracks on this release showcase his studio mastery and innate ability for producing captivating techno, which is a talent backed up by regular support from many genre’s most influential DJs.

Tiger Stripes is a Swedish techno producer who is internationally respected for his links to imprints such as Adam Beyer’s Drumcode and his spine-tingling rework is an incredible remix that has the potential to be one of 2022’s best techno tracks.

“Ametista” opens the release with its pulsating bassline and electric synth line which is underpinned by a pounding kick drum.

Tiger Stripes’s remix of “Ametista” is a chunked-up version which builds to an epic breakdown that fills the track with Balearic vibes before the percussion slams back in with devastating force.

“Solar Rock” is the second of the originals and its tantalising synth line builds suspense and tension while the fast-flowing percussion and thundering kick drum unleash a tidal wave of energy.

Theiz ‘For The Love EP’

Artist: Theiz
Title: For The Love EP
Label: EPMmusic
Cat. #: EPM102
Format: Digital Download / Streaming
Release Date: 16 December 2022
Tracklist:
1. 1000 Year Cycle of The Dragonfly
2. Filtered Reality
3. For The Love
4. Infinite Compassion

EPMmusic rounds off 2022 with a third EP from the rejuvenated production genius of Mathijs Schippers, a.k.a. Theiz.

Theiz is now some 30 years deep in the scene. Having released on labels such as Eevolute, Techno-Tourist and Ear-land Recordings in the late ’90s and early ’00s, Mathijs began producing again in 2015 with no pressure to release – simply just for the sake of making new music. His activity as a music journalist brought him back into contact with the music industry and now freshly motivated, he is firmly in the saddle with this, his third EP and the accompanying album ‘All That Remains’ lined up for early 2023.

As Theiz himself says, “This EP has a more dance floor-oriented sound without losing a certain flow of “hopeful” melancholy. These two elements are reflected in the first track ‘1000 Year Cycle of the Dragonfly’. The title is inspired by a nature documentary I watched around the time I was making the track. The same feeling of hope and maybe the search for spirituality seeps through into the next track ‘Filtered Reality’ in a house-y flow. Then the darker side of melancholy is expressed in ‘For The Love’, the wanting but not always being able to love. The last track of this four-track release, ‘Infinite Compassion’ goes down the same path of its predecessor but takes it a notch deeper to a level of spirituality that I can only experience with music. My hope is to spread the spark that started these four little fires…”

Drumcode’s beloved A-Sides compilation makes a welcome return after a two-year absence, with a mammoth 25-track feast covering every shade of the techno spectrum. The project was devised in 2012 as a way of showcasing the wealth of strong material Adam Beyer receives each year, which due to Drumcode’s busy release schedule, might not otherwise find a home on the label. Since then, it’s grown to become an essential fixture on the techno release schedule and a marker for where the genre stands in any given year.

Spil London Concept

Jack Swift ‘Elevate EP’

Artist: Jack Swift
Title: Elevate EP
Remixer: James Dexter and Jeremy Sylvester
Label: SPIL RECORDS
Cat. #: SPILREC001
Format: Digital
Release Date: 18th November 2022
Tracklist
1. Elevate
2. That’s It Mate
3. That’s It Mate (James Dexter Remix)
4. That’s It Mate (Jeremy Sylvester Vintage Rub)

SPIL RECORDS launches with label founder Jack Swift’s ‘Elevate’ EP, with the Londoner backed by remixes from Inermu boss James Dexter and garage legend Jeremy Sylvester.
Early support incl. Jamie Jones, Enzo Siragusa, Richy Ahmed, Archie Hamilton, Chris Stussy, Josh Butler, Franky Rizardo…

One of the scene’s most talented and technical individuals behind the decks and an artist building his reputation as an established producer, London-based talent Jack Swift is getting ready to level things up further following an impressive twelve months. Having released material via AVTR, Politics Of Dancing, Inermu, and Make You Move Records, his next release welcomes the launch of a new project in the form of his own label, SPIL RECORDS. Showcasing the sounds of his hometown and its influences within house and beyond, the first release welcomes an impressive array of talent with the label boss delivering two fresh originals backed by remixes from Inermu head-honcho and close friend James Dexter, and highly influential house and garage icon, Jeremy Sylvester.

‘I’ve always wanted to create a platform which would give me complete freedom as an artist as well as the opportunity to build a community of like-minded producers and close friends. The ethos is simple; high-quality house music (with a healthy dose of garage) mirroring my formative years listening to the pirates of London in the mid-‘90s and beyond!’ – Jack Swift

The title track ‘Elevate’ showcases Swift’s growing sound, fusing traditional House with UK and US Garage influences, combining hazy pads and sweeping leads with skippy drums and an infectious core groove. Next, ‘That’s It Mate’ builds on things as dubby chords guide tough kicks, heavy low-end sonics, and further swirling cosmic melodies. James Dexter’s take on ‘That’s It Mate’ sees the UK favourite draw for two-step percussion arrangements and a murky and menacing bassline, before Jeremy Sylvester closes the show in style with his ‘Vintage Rub’ – harnessing resonant organs and soulful vocal interjections to journey into classic UK Garage territories. PACKSHOT Uncertain - Suspect EP - Mind Medizin

Uncertain ‘Suspect EP’

Artist: Uncertain
Title: Suspect EP
Label: Mind Medizin
Cat. #: MDZN008
Format: Digital
Release Date: 18th November 2022
Tracklist:
01 Suspect
02 Anxious

Lady Tazz’s kinky techno outlet Mind Medizin welcomes Uncertain for a powerful new techno outing.

Uncertain formerly worked as Boriqua Tribez and has been at the heart of the European underground for years. Under this alias, he brings a love of the classic sound to a passion for the frantic side of techno and is a thrilling DJ who plays across three decks with rare dexterity. The likes of Richie Hawtin, Ben Sims and Amelie Lens are bona fide fans of his music. Under both aliases, he has made more than 50 EPs on labels such as KMS, Kneaded Pains and Uncage. Now he steps up to one of the contemporary scene’s finest imprints.

First up is ‘Suspect’ which immediately locks you into its tunneling techno groove. As the seductive rubbery drums race on, chattery claps pepper the mix and warped vocals add a freaky atmosphere. It’s banging but controlled, hard but funky and perfect for heady dance floors.

The superb ‘Anxious’ then takes off at high speed on a cantering techno rhythm. The bulky drums and razor-sharp hi-hats never let up as a whip-snapping bassline darts around below. It’s high tension, high-pressure, supple and driving techno with deft synths that add just enough colour next to the clipped soul of the vocal stabs.

This is a brilliant brace of powerful techno cuts from Uncertain and Mind Medizin.
