Eric Haynes is Höhn, an accomplished pianist, composer and live musician who founded the neo-soul band Busty and the Bass. As well as writing music for shows like Kitz on Netflix, he has toured across Europe and North America, supported BADBADNOTGOOD and Wyclef Jean, played high-profile events like SXSW and collaborated with greats like Macy Gray and George Clinton.

It was time in techno capital Berlin that saw him falling for the direct emotions of that genre. In turn, that inspired him to head out into nature to capture field recordings and fuse their real-world energy with the synthesis of techno and jazz’s harmonic concepts. It makes for a sound that finds Höhn exploring how geography and nostalgia influence music with captivating songs made from sounds recorded in the wilds of Canada.

This first single from the album showcases that in sublime fashion. It is made from sounds from around Egypt Lake in Banff National Park and is partly inspired by the idea of “music to pump water to”, along with the vibe of an “underwater lake party”. The deeply atmospheric and evocative tune uses a lot of water-based samples, like the sounds of throwing rocks into water or wind on the lake which takes you to a sunset rave beside a favourite body of water. It’s slow and serene electronica that embraces the same melody throughout, while harmonic and arrangement choices bring intrigue and take listeners on a real musical journey.

This is a tantalising glimpse of the artful and evocative new album to come.

He is a hotly tipped talent set to break through in 2023 after top Beatport hits and support from the likes of Black Coffee and Bedouin. Songwriter, percussionist and vocalist G. Zamora is an Afro house mainstay and label regular who has a rich musical background that always shines through in his work.

This time the pair create a serious, energetic and deep track with engaging melodies and powerful, organic percussion. G.Zamora’s voice tells a story of love and does so with real emotion. It speaks of a trapped soul begging for a second chance and makes for a moving moment on the dance floor.

This is a fresh and characterful tune from this ever-innovative pair.

Shlomi Aber returns to Ovum for the first time since 2013’s ‘Slack Tide’ with a brilliant new three-track EP.

Shlomi has long been an integral part of Ovum’s history, as well as the history of dance music itself. He runs his own Be As One label and is a constant innovator who brings depth and synth craft to techno. From his breakout release, ‘Freakside’ in 2007 to his critically acclaimed album ‘Chicago Days/Detroit Nights’, the Barcelona-based, Tel Aviv-born artist has released on all the scene’s best labels while laying down furious three-deck sets around the world. He sent these recent demos to Ovum head Josh Wink “and it was an easy decision to welcome our old friend back for this incredible new release.”

Opener ‘Rewired’ is a loopy techno cut with slowly tumbling chords that fall through space as sleek drums roll onwards. It’s a track with a grand sense of space that brings widescreen drama to the dance floor. The superb ‘Brickwall’ is a suspensory masterpiece with unresolved synth loops keeping you hanging above the mysterious techno beats. It’s brilliantly atmospheric as well as hypnotic. Last of all is ‘Dream To Be Drum’, the quickest and most mind-melting of the lot. With shades of Detroit techno’s finest soulful sounds, it’s a futuristic and tightly woven techno workout.

This EP marks a fantastic return to Ovum for Shlomi Aber.

Legendary Neopolitan techno label Unrilis close out 2022 with compilation featuring Luigi Madonna, Markantonio, Roberto Capuano and Marco Conte.

For more than 15 years, Rino Cerrone’s Unrilis have been at the top of their game, pushing its rolling brand of techno from the Naples scene that has spawned the likes of Joseph Capriati, Luigi Madonna and Markantonio. Now closing out the year with their 100th release, they round up a world-renowned crew of artists from the label for a VA titled ‘Fingerprint’, serving as a reference point for their identity, sound and style throughout the years.

Napoli techno lynchpin Roberto Capuano opens the release with the aptly named ‘Climax’. Sequenced sirens are intertwined with tough beats before a mammoth breakdown showcases his mastery over suspense and release. Next up, LuigiMadonna provides pure, hedonistic techno power via ‘Fake Mirror’, a speedy, thumping rhythm fused with hypnotic arpeggios. Markantonio then throws ‘Bangers’ into the mix, a classic, analog-feeling track boasting catchy synth lines and a funky, retro dialogue snippet. Audiomatiques, now going by his given name Marco Conte, finishes things up with ‘People’ in which futuristic, warped vocals are offset by chants while distorted synths filter through sturdy kickdrums.

MASK unveil the final entry in its untitled release series.

Berlin-based label MASK records has become known for releasing a string of vinyl-only EP’s by unnamed producers which have seen the support of respected artists such as Jimpster, DJ Bone, Ben Sims, Santiago Salazar, Laurent Garnier, Ryan Elliot, Marcel Dettmann, and the Blessed Madonnaamongst others. Now, the tenth and final instalment of the series consists of an eclectic collection of techno and house cuts, all recorded on tape during an analog live session in the artist’s studio.

The A1 eases you into the record through glitchy textures, swelling synths and broken beats before the A2 gets you into a rapturous tracky groove offset by lo-fi vocals and dreamy pads. The A3 takes a darker turn through hypnotic drums and a droning bass, readying the listener for the B-Side which continues this raw energy.

The B1 picks up the pace with energetic drums and clean ride cymbals while the B2 incorporates floaty arps and a tantalising repeating vocal. ‘B3’ closes out the release with a retro 80s synth feel, putting a wrap on yet another incredible vinyl EP by this exciting underground label.

Maceo Plex’s 2020 track ‘Nu World’ was Pete Tong’s ‘Essential New Tune’ when it first dropped, and now comes a Solomun remix that is sure to be just as big.

The original of ‘Nu World’ is a rousing single designed to sweep dancers off their feet. In Solomun’s hands, it becomes one of his signature melodic masterpieces. The Diynamic label founder is one of dance music’s most globally recognised stars. He has been immortalised in the legendary Grand Theft Auto video game, holds his own influential residency at Pacha in Ibiza and is on a near constant tour of the world’s biggest clubs and festivals where he leads the house scene from the front.

His seven minute rework of ‘Nu World’ is a typically emotive house track with yearning vocal samples immediately pulling you in. The fresh drums are underpinned by warm, rumbling bass, and the searching synth craft is expansive. When the classic piano chords come in mid-way through, hands will go skyward and the dance floor will be united as one.
