Opening 2023 in style, late January sees Bucharest meet Paris as the pair unveil three captivating and absorbing collaborations for the second release in FUSE’s newly launched X Series with ‘Stranger To No One’.

On the flip, B1 ‘Apres Midi’ switches things up as luminous synths and crisp drums guide hazy textures and further understated acid elements, before closing the show with the moody and menacing after-hours sonics of the darker, breaks-tinged ‘Farside’.

Operator ‘Carbon Towers EP’

Artist: Operator
Title: Carbon Towers EP
Label: Symbolism
Cat. #: SYMDIGI027
Format: Digital
Release Date: 27th January 2023
Tracklist
01 Operator
02 Surface Shimmer
03 The Hanging Edge
04 The Hidden

Operator joins Ben Sims’ Symbolism label with the ‘Carbon Towers’ EP.

A mainstay of the Mord label in recent years, Operator’s debut four-track EP for Symbolism takes in peak time panel-beaters, a warm chord-driven groover and sinister broken beats.

The title track’s concentrated soundscapes make for an imposing opener, but one that uses its density to maximum effect, particularly in its memorable breakdown. ‘Surface Shimmer’s lush keys and crisp, almost sharp, drums follow in classy style while the cinematic and decidedly ‘noir’ tone of ‘The Hanging Edge’ counterpoints intricate percussion and a broken groove before the moody power of ‘The Hidden’ rounds out the EP.

PACKSHOT Made By Pete & Zoe Kypri - Horizon Red - Crosstown Rebels

Made By Pete, Zoe Kypri ‘Horizon Red’

Artist: Made By Pete, Zoe Kypri
Title: Horizon Red
Label: Crosstown Rebels
Cat. #: CRM285
Format: Digital / Vinyl
Release Date: 20th January 2023
Tracklist
1) Horizon Red
2) Horizon Red (Pete’s Dub)

Made By Pete returns to Crosstown Rebels as he links up with Zoe Kypri for the anthemic ‘Horizon Red’.

Born and raised in London, DJ and producer Made By Pete has flourished in recent years, making appearances around the globe from Set Underground (Tulum) and fabric (London) to Off Week (Barcelona) and beyond. Gaining plaudits from leading names in Damian Lazarus, Keinemusik and Pete Tong, to name just a few, the UK talent has crafted a string of stand-out releases via the likes of Flying Circus, RADIANT and Crosstown Rebels. Having first touched down on the imprint in 2018 alongside Jem Cooke for ‘So Long’, with two further appearances since, he opens the label’s 2023 schedule alongside R&B, jazz and Neo-soul singer/songwriter Zoe Kypri for the gripping sonics of ‘Horizon Red’ – with the track set to be remixed by label boss Damian Lazarus in the coming weeks.

“We caught each other’s attention whilst playing sets at Tobacco Dock in London, and the admiration was mutual. We knew we wanted to create something that evoked feelings of the afterglow. That dissonant feeling at sunset when the horizon is so fiercely beautiful, yet the inevitability of the day falling behind the mountains is near. A simultaneous beginning and end.” – Made By Pete & Zoe Kypri.

A dynamic track guided by rich chords, rolling organic percussion and Kypri’s powerful yet graceful vocals, ‘Horizon Red’ is a euphoric and captivating journey balancing energetic builds with deeper moments, while Pete’s Dub strips things back as spiralling synths and hazy atmospheres take hold for a late-night trip.

LAFT ‘Maple’

Artist: LAFT
Title: Maple
Label: badabing diskos
Cat. #: badabing01lps1
Format: Digital
Release Date: 24th January 2023
Tracklist
1. Maple
2. Maple (House Version)

Norway-based duo LAFT tease their upcoming album ‘New Objectivity’ with ‘Maple,’ a superb single from it backed with an alternative house version.

This pair is made up of badabing diskos label boss Håkon Vinnogg who is best known for his fresh disco and house sounds as Vinny Villbass. He is a core part of the Scandinavian underground with releases on an array of top labels. Here he works with Tomas Järmyr, an accomplished percussionist and formally trained jazz master who is in groups such as Motorpsycho and Årabrot and has toured with Pantha Du Prince’s The Bell Laboratory. Their forthcoming album is a triumph of live musicianship, skilled arrangement and the sweet fusion of cosmic synth work and original house grooves.

‘Maple’ is a richly layered track with shuffling drums and warm, gooey bass. The molten synths that pan about the mix constantly evolve as the bass does its own dance below. Wooden block hits, distant solar winds and subtle, wordless vocals all help bring this track to life in magnificent fashion.

The House version is tweaked for club play – it retains the lush musicality of the original, but with more physical drums. They unfold in fresh, broken patterns with more tense synth leads and an eerie atmosphere making this perfect for the late-night hours.

‘Maple’ is a tasty appetiser for the full-length ‘New Objectivity’ album to come.

PACKSHOT Butane - Dirt, Worldwide EP - Extrasketch

Butane ‘Dirt, Worldwide EP’

Artist: Butane
Title: Dirt, Worldwide EP
Label: Extrasketch
Cat. #: EX43
Format: Digital
Release Date: 20th January 2023
Tracklist
1. Club Foot
2. Voice Inside (Filbert Street Mix)
3. Whatcha Doin

Extrasketch boss Butane returns with a trio of no-nonsense house jams across ‘Dirt, Worldwide’.

Continuing his explorations within house, techno, minimal and beyond, it’s safe to say San Francisco-based DJ, producer and label boss Andrew Rasse, aka Butane remains an artist at the top of his game when it comes to crafting functional, intuitive dance floor material. Kicking off the New Year with yet more classy and quality house efforts, late January sees Rasse deliver Extrasketch’s first output of 2023 as he unveils three fresh cuts in typically slick fashion with his ‘Dirt, Worldwide’ EP.

Lead track ‘Club Foot’ employs a killer organic tech house groove guided by rolling drums and shakers. Winding along effortlessly, the subtly hypnotic, infectious tune shapes up to be a low-key terrace anthem. Next, ‘Voice Inside (Filbert Street Mix)’ veers off into a slightly wonky and off-kilter warehouse trip as fuzzy analog bass patterns merge with warped vocal interjections and skippy percussion for a decidedly mind-meets-body affair. ‘Whatcha Doin’ closes the package on a smoother, dubby note. Harnessing a slightly eerie tension across the track, Rasse deftly drops some ear candy in the form of a cheeky vocal sample while harnessing those signature Butane elements. Another late-night mover in the bag.

Gabu_OSquared_Unicorn Release

Asante In The Jungle:
Zanzibar is home to a magical connection with mother nature, as she whispers her secrets. Her nature is preserved in sound, as coconut trees dance to her jazz in the background.

Walking off the beaten path, you enjoy your twilight stroll. Something catches your eye behind that oak tree, and behold a unicorn shines through the leaves to greet you! You attempt touch, but all vanishes in that fleeting moment as you are whisked back to reality.

PACKSHOT Various Artists (incl. Bakayan, Idd Aziz, Wild Dark, Hauy) - Horus - Sounds Of Khemit

Various ‘Horus’

Artist: Various
Title: Horus
Label: Sounds Of Khemit
Cat. #: SOK014
Format: Digital
Release Date: 27th January 2023
Tracklist:
01 Bákayan, Idd Aziz – Mezdeke
02 Wild Dark – Angels
03 Hauy – Mycelium

Sounds Of Khemit’s first release of 2023 is another sublime house excursion featuring tracks from Bákayan & Idd Aziz, Wild Dark and Hauy. The EP will be preceded with the release of the three individual singles, one week apart, starting on January 13th.

The backstory for this EP is drawn from Horus, one of the most important Masters of Ancient Khemit. His rule over Khemit influenced the culture for millennia and he was seen as the master of light, truth and knowledge of everything he touches. He had magical healing abilities inherited from his mother Wulsa and some authors believed Horus and his mother Isis could have shaped the image of Jesus and the Virgin Mary.

First up is Bákayan who released on the label at the start of 2022. Here he works with Idd Aziz, who was already touring the world aged 15 and is one of Kenya’s most accomplished vocalists and percussionists. Together they cook up the brilliantly engaging ‘Mezdeke’, a track built on alluring vocal chants, organic percussion and silky grooves full of spiritualism.

Wild Dark is a New York duo with over two decades of experience behind them and releases on this label as well as the likes of Do Not Sit On The Furniture Recordings. Their brilliant ‘Angels’ is a candle lit late night deep house tune with muted melodies and enchanting pads. Subtle vocals drift in and out as the rolling groove lures you in ever further.

Brazilian-born, Montreal-based All Day I Dream and Get Physical Music associate Hauy closes the EP with ‘Mycelium’. It’s a track that takes you on a colourful trip as the loose chords ride the scales and smart filters build the tension. Add in the cosmic melodies and you have some sublime dance floor escapism.

This is another storied and cultured house EP from Sounds Of Khemit.
