Hardgroove welcomes back ANNĒ for five intricate techno cuts

ANNĒ‘s second release for Ben Sims‘ legendary Hardgroove imprint arrives as the Greek artist’s star is fully in ascendance. Having chalked up releases for OutOf Place, Soma and Hardgroove sister label Symbolism in recent years, 2023 has seen her develop a hefty touring schedule across the EU and beyond.

Kicking off with the formidable groove of ‘Peacock Feathers’ with its clipped vocal sample and staccato stabs, the ‘Distill’ EP doesn’t mess about. ‘Roller’ follows as if it was a DJ’s transition, just denser and with a pleasing swagger and swing throughout. ’80’s Revisited’ keeps the pace, but musically heads in a more sinister direction before the title track emerges with anthemic intention. Closing out is ’60’s Style’, a track that shows intensity, tempo, class and melody can co-exist gracefully.

Guy Gerber announces RUMORS residency at new venue

RUMORS has always been one of Ibiza’s most cultured parties and this summer it finds a new spiritual home at Playa Soleil, the luxury oasis nestled in the heart of Platja d’en Bossa. Every Friday from 30 June until 29 September, Guy Gerber’s world-renowned party will host electronic music’s most exciting artists in a truly Balearic setting from 6pm each week.

Israeli artist Gerber has always forged his own creative path as a DJ, label owner, producer and promoter. The multi-instrumentalist has recently sold out Koko London with his live show and is also playing Hollywood Bowl this summer. He has penned countless timeless dance tracks such as “What To Do”, “Bocat” and “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head”, served up genre-defining influential mixes, collaborated with Puff Daddy, and toured the world with his RUMORS concept. Malek Ales made a Dj mix for our TRAPEZ compilation Embark this year. So here finally comes his fourth solo EP which we think features some of the strongest trax he has written for us so far.

His Ep kicks off with the title track “Lips” and what you can except is nothing short of a panic stricken morse code lead sequence. The rush of energy never stops and the groove is as always one of the highlights in his music since done in perfection.

“Lash Out” is a cool and in a way a joyful tune, uplifting and really putting that feeling across for everyone on the dance-floor. That is repetitive exciting simplistic music on a high level! Enjoy

“Lockstep” feels like a sequenced earthquake. Pounding kicks on a loopy sequence meet cool FX and percussion sounds that have a nice acoustic quality providing a deep sounding end to it, whilst it is still energetic and non stop as ever with Malek Ales.

llario Alicante’s techno-focused Virgo outlet welcomes Ackermann for the excellently titled ‘Take My Pills, Pay My Bills’ EP, featuring remixes from Luke Hess and Jancen.

Ackermann is a contemporary techno tastemaker, a resident at Stuttgart’s Lehmann Club and a regular on Marco Faraone’s UNCAGE label. He has also collaborated with artists like Michael Klein and Martin Eyerer, with high- profile support coming in from the likes of Truncate, DVS1 and Ben Klock. A prolific producer with plenty of fresh ideas, he recently launched his own label Safe Space, and now he impresses on Ilario Alicante’s increasingly essential Virgo imprint with his ‘Take My Pills, Pay My Bills’ EP.

The title track is compelling techno funk with muscular drums full of bounce. Molten synths peel off the groove next to a dark vocal that repeats the title to get you further locked in. It’s classy and packed with well-designed soundscapes. ‘Dream Free’ is warp-speed techno with warm and dubby undercurrents. A subtle vocal encourages you to ‘follow me’ and brings some human soul as the tight chords twist and turn up top to a mesmeric effect. ‘Take My Pills, Pay My Bills’ (Pills Version) is a peak-time techno rush with urgent drum patterns that make an indelible impact.

Luke Hess is a Detroit dub techno don who has dropped cuts on the likes of FXHE and Echocord. He brings his signature sound to a slick remix of ‘Dream Free’ with icy hi-hats and rubbery drums that lock you into a hypnotic state. DJ/producer Jancen hails from the Netherlands and is making moves with tunes on Solid Tracks, Safe Space and Be As One. His take on ‘Dream Free’ closes the show as he combines a hefty low-end with Motor City synths and irresistibly rubbery kicks.

After acquiring the catalogue of legendary Canadian house label Definitive Recordings earlier in the year, Get Physical Music is proud to present a new various artists series that focuses on some of its most classic cuts. Definitive Classics #001 features newly remastered music from Blunted Dummies, John Acquaviva, Chuck Phulasole and Jetstream.

This cult Canadian label was founded by John Acquaviva, Richard Hawtin, and Karl Kowalski in 1992 as an embodiment of their vision for house music. “Not too hard, not too soft” was the mantra and it built up a fine body of talented artists who made a real impact on the global underground and helped to foment a unique identity for Definitive Recordings. John Acquaviva will continue to A&R for the label and work closely alongside the Get Physical team in this new era. The label’s signature sound is showcased here with the first fantastic EP in the new series.

First up is Shawn Caesar and Ty James aka Blunted Dummies’ ‘House For All’ which became an anthem soon after its 1993 release. It’s a John Acquaviva edit presented here and is a brilliant raw and deep cut with chunky drums offset by light-emitting chords and a hooky vocal sample that brings a playful touch.

Chuck Phulasole is the pseudonym of Toronto based soul & funk artist John James. He became a mainstay of the label with this house focused project and here his ‘Wanna Be With You’ sounds as good as ever. It’s a jazzed-up and loose-limbed house cut with plenty of US soul, dusty drums and a heart-wrenching vocal over a funky, knotted bassline that cannot fail to make a mark.

Last of all is Jetstream’s ‘Seriously’ which was the first-ever release on the label and the only ever tune that Karl E. Kowalski put out under the alias. It’s a superb one, though, that hits hard with driving grooves overlaid with smeared chords. The power of the drums is matched by loopy piano refrains that provide and irresistible emotional release.

This series shines a vital light on what has been a hugely influential label in the history of house music.
