The Arch Brighton set to reopen after refurbishment

The Arch, 187-189 Kings Road Arches, Brighton, BN1 1NB | thearch.club | @thearchbrighton

Fifteen months of darkness have passed. No parties. No funding. But no worries: it might have been the bleakest ever period in the long and storied history of Brighton’s The Arch, but the club never gave up hope. After a long and arduous wait, the iconic venue is back with a bang on Saturday June 26th with a full refurb, new soundsystem, 2 new arches and a sensational season of events featuring the likes of Jamie Jones, Maceo Plex, Skream, Shanti Celeste, wAFF, Saoirse, Rich Nxt, He.She.They, Cafe Mambo and many more.

This much-loved club was about to start its busiest month ever in March 2020. It had been five years since the space reopened as ‘The Arch’ and a deserving celebration was on the horizon. Then Covid-19 hit. The venue was closed and soon after had its bid for Culture Recovery Funding rejected by the Arts Council despite its diverse and culturally significant programme. What’s more, it was decided the time would be used for a full refurb.

Damien Fell – Head of Music, The Arch & Life in the Park Festival. “Rather than resting on our laurels we decided to give this historic Brighton venue a new lease of life and committed to a big refurbishment, even though we did not receive the Arts Council funding. The last year has been extremely challenging; to keep the business alive we built a take away bar from the venue’s fire exit and dug in to get the job done. The Arch is looking the best it ever has and I can only sit here in awe of the work that has been done by the team as we set to reopen with Jamie Jones on Saturday 26th June.”

The storied Victorian arches on Kings Road have been completely refreshed with stripped back and newly polished concrete floors, exposed steel mezzanines for overarching views and unfussy but stylish industrial decor throughout. Sound and light production has been upgraded including new LED screens, 4D laser show, CO2 cannons, immersive lighting and two brand new rooms – The Box and The Hangar. A bespoke ‘12KW Funktion-one Dance Stack’ sound system with twelve 21 inch bass speakers has been refurbished and re-calibrated for unrivalled sound quality in the main room.

Says Tony Andrews of Funktion-One, “In addition two Funktion-One sound systems were required for their new rooms; The Box and The Hangar. The management were also keen to collaborate with us on upgrading the general acoustic properties of the club. This is a club sound system we’re very proud of.”

The Arch is a space that has defined clubbing on the South Coast for decades. It first opened in 1984 with the goal of being “a club for artists, run by artists who understand performers and their needs.” Ever since it has attracted a seriously music loving crowd and championed an always underground sound. Previous incarnations as The Zap Club, Digital and Coliseum have seen influential acts like Chemical Brothers, Sonic Youth, Moby, Paul Weller and DJs Harvey, Sven Vath, Laurent Garnier and countless more all play plus blueprint-setting LGBTQ+ nights such as Club Bent and Club Shame as well as many more.

Says Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim, “The music community in Brighton is close to my heart; it’s where I live and I’ve been a part of it for decades. The Arch is also part of that and they’ve put Brighton’s nightlife scene at the centre of the UK underground movement for several years now. It’s been a struggle for them during the pandemic and it’s great to see them refurbishing the space. The club is part of Brighton’s musical heritage (I can remember the heady days when it was Zap Club!) and the team at The Arch are preserving that for future generations. I really hope to play there again this summer!”

This latest chapter is underpinned by an all-new resident team that mixes youthful energy, vision and enthusiasm with the class and understanding of some key UK mainstays: Hatcha, Denney, Fleur Shore, Joseph Edmund, Summer Ghemati and That Songbird will play on rotation each and every week.

As for the new season, it boasts a tasteful cross-section of the best in house, techno, bass, tech, electro and garage from a diverse cross-section of talents. The grand opening is June 26th hosted by Otherworld and headlined by Jamie Jones, then Do Not Sleep rolls in on July 3rd with Chris Stussy, Seb Zito and Ray Mono, Skream and Cassy play July 10th, Renaissance brings Maceo Plex on July 17th, Dance on Arrival on July 24th is headlined by Rich NxT and GW Harrison and then Cafe Mambo closes out the month on the 30th with Mark Knight and Danny Howard.

August welcomes He.She.They with Shanti Celeste and Saoirse, more events with Cafe Mambo, Otherworld and Clockwork Orange and Eastenderz with East End Dubs, Rossi and Fleur Shore and plenty more in September including a Boundary Festival Aftershow and Otherworld with Richy Ahmed.

Alongside the refurbishment, The Arch team are also spreading positivity in the region by launching Life in the Park Festival at Brighton Rugby Club. Each of the eight special shows will welcome 2000 people to party outside to the sounds of Orbital, Denis Sulta, Nightmares on Wax, David Rodigan and more, all as a way of celebrating something of a return to normality.

After a long, hard 15 months, the much-anticipated return to The Arch will be explosive indeed. Do not miss out on this historic re-opening. For more information and tickets head to The Arch’s new website at thearch.club.

VOLTAGE announce full line up for 2021 festival

Event: VOLTAGE Festival 2021
Dates: 7 & 8 August 2021
Venue: Transfo, Blokellestraat 113b, 8550 Zwevegem, Belgium
Tickets: https://www.voltagefestival.com/

After the record edition of 2019, VOLTAGE is preparing to hit even harder in the new decade. The abandoned power plant, Transfo in Zwevegem (BE), welcomes a mix of the best national and international techno artists, on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 August. The announcement of the complete line-up will make many techno-hearts skip a beat. With none other than Len Faki, Karenn, 999999999, British Murder Boys, SPFDJ and Anetha on the festival’s bill, the second weekend of August is one to look forward to!

VOLTAGE has grown into an impressive powerhouse on the national and international festival circuit. Last year, no less than 25% of the visitors came from abroad, namely from New Zealand, South Korea, USA, Australia, Austria, UK, France, The Netherlands and many more. Over the years, the organization has stuck to its core values: a mix of established techno heroes and emerging talents, presented in an industrial context: the amazing Transfo site in Zwevegem (Belgium).

A series of local, national and international artists will bring the old power plant back to life on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 August. More than 50 artists complete the line-up, with Len Faki as the absolute headliner. The German DJ, producer, Berghain resident and label owner is seen as one of the greatest techno gurus on earth.

The line-up is further strengthened by the duo VTSS and Randomer, under the name of their musical project Body Sushi. The French DJ, producer and label owner, Anetha, will also be present. She is seen as the new generation’s leading figure and her musical DNA – a mix of EBM, trance, electro and old school ’90s techno – goes hand in hand with VOLTAGE’s concept. Viper Diva, the brand-new project of Taapion Records label owner Shlømo and his French countryman Hadone, will also head to the picturesque city of Zwevegem in August.

VOLTAGE always delivers a fine selection of live sets. This year it’s brought by Karenn, consisting of the renowned duo Blawan and Pariah. As well as the Italian duo 999999999, who already blew up the Turbine stage in 2018. The British Murder Boys, aka Regis and Surgeon, who have not performed in Belgium for 11 years (apart from their performance in C12). Last but definitely not least, four amazing live sets brought by: the Germans Desroi and Shed, the English duo AnD and the Belgians Techno Thriller.

VOLTAGE’s line-up is perfect for techno-adventurers looking for innovations in the scene. The bill includes the German SPFDJ, a resident at the revolutionary “Herrensauna”. She will bring a rough set which party goers can attend at their own risk. The Danish DJ and label owner, Identified Patient, who is praised for her unique sound consisting of fast, streamlined stompers with a hint of electro and wrong-speed EBM. Inhalt der Nacht, founder of the labels Modul & Lebendig, resident DJ at the famous Berlin club Griessmuehle and considered as one of the most promising artists of the moment, will be expected. To top things off VOLTAGE booked the Dutchman named Identified Patient. This frequently asked DJ at the avant-garde club “De School”, is widely praised for his signature sound, namely an experimental sound that floats between techno and acid.

The artists will be divided over three stages: the Anode, the Turbine and since 2018, the Rotor stage. Several organizations are given the opportunity to host their own stage and to let their DJ selection go wild on the VOLTAGE fans. There will be six hosts, including three returning ones: the French collective Possession and the Ghentian organization Rimbu. Brand new hosts are Kompass Klub which has already been elected best Belgian club for 2 years. Kompass is inviting the brand new STYXX (fka Stygian’s River), to join them in hosting the Anode stage on Saturday. But also Fuse, the longest running techno club in Belgium, C12 that finished second in the “Belgian club top 30” at the 2019 Red Bull Elektropedia awards and Voltage Imprint, the eponymous label with promising Belgian talents.

However, as VOLTAGE Festival is a test event – the first test festival in Belgium – there will be a few obligations festival goers have to adhere to:
– All visitors must install the Close app.
– All visitors will need to show a valid covid Safe Ticket (for Belgian visitors) or a valid European Digital COVID Certificate (for non Belgian visitors) each day upon entering the festival grounds.

A covid Safe Ticket or European Digital COVID Certificate is granted when:
– You have been fully vaccinated for at least two weeks.
– You can present a negative and officially registered PCR test no older than 72 hours.
– You have had COVID in the past six months and can present proof.

Rebirth, a distinctive Italian record label known for its numerous electro and progressive house EPs, is set to release an ambitious double vinyl release titled ‘Ciao Italia. Generazioni Underground’ (hello Italy, underground generations). Do you recognize the stylized man in the artwork? That was the logo used for the 1990 FIFA world cup, which was hosted in Italy. Anyway this is a great track collection, it brings back to life some really amazing and oldschool productions made around 1992. The release is an ode to all the Italian dj and producers who, 30 years ago, were into electronic music and got involved into a new wave of influences, contaminations and experimentations.
The vinyl publication features an interesting paper insert, where you can read some informations regarding the artists and the track selection.

After the disappointment of postponing the festival for a second year, the anguish of lockdown, the trepidation of normality returning and the butterflies in the pit of your stomach as the first rave back approaches – all signs point to an historic summer ahead. Everything has been building towards J2 at Tobacco Dock. The light at the end of the tunnel inches closer. All that pent-up energy will be unleashed. Anticipate emotional scenes as London crowds return to their playground.

The formidable lineup combines Junction 2’s past and those booked for the 2022 edition, as well as names introduced during Junction 2’s virtual programme in addition to a scattering of new faces. The line-up represents the core sound of J2, orbiting around an identity of underground house and techno, underpinned by the most influential and exciting artists in the industry. With four arenas to fill across two days, expect to find quality in every room from The Great Gallery to the Car Park, The Terrace to The Little Gallery..

Saturday 28th August 2021 kicks off with multi-disciplinary artist and Aphex Twin protege, Afrodeutsche, who will be spreading her vast roots and influences across Tobacco Dock. Joining her is one of modern techno’s leading ladies, the highly-talented Amelie Lens and rising Drumcode Records artists, ANNA. A favourite from London’s notorious Sunday after hours scene, Ceri adds further dynamite whilst Cici, will be channelling positive energy from all corners of the universe. Rounding off the first swathe of female talent, Bristol-based Danielle will be showcasing her many tastes and styles.

Last time we caught him playing above Berlin at the city’s TV Tower for Connections, but now J2 favourite, Dixon is returning to Tobacco Dock for a set in front of a live crowd – always an unmissable event. Self-deprecating cult hero DJ Boring offers some contrasting light and shade against the rest of the line-up, while arguably the most experienced name on the bill is inimitable electro and breakbeat master DMX Krew. Flying in from the USA will be Chicago-native and High Priestess of Motherbeat, Eris Drew.

He’s set to play live at J2 festival next June, but this August bank holiday Jon Hopkins will take to the decks to spin his favourite records. Adding to the rising home-grown talent, Leed’s native Kessie will make his debut and following some epic past appearances, Maceo Plex is confirmed for an extended four-hour set, providing the opportunity to showcase his full range from deviant disco, to electro, deep house and darker techno. After impressing in her Junction 2 stream from Millennium Mills, NTS star OK Williams gets a well-earned booking on the big stage, whilst fearless Palestinian artist Sama’ Abdulhadi and Clash Lion front women Terr complete the line-up.

The programme on Sunday 29th August 2021 is no less drama-filled. Junction 2’s official ambassador, Adam Beyer takes top billing, having overseen J2’s growth from inner city festival to a global stage. Rhythm Section ringleader Bradley Zero will trade mixes with Yu Su in an eye-catching b2b, whilst Charlotte de Witte will bring heavy artillery and a need for speed, to be matched by Monnom Black architect Dax J. One-woman funk machine, DJ Holographic brings her impeccable selection skills to the programme. Two of Europe’s most hotly-tipped DJs are next up, with Effy and her larger than life collaborator Heléna Star both confirmed. From next-gen to veteran, well-travelled K-HAND will be showcasing the sounds of her Detroit hometown.

Fresh from being the subject matter of new rave documentary Off The Record, certified legend Laurent Garnier will be making up for lost time with a long overdue Junction 2 debut, as well as his first appearance at Tobacco Dock. Truly one for the history books. Classically trained pianist, turned DJ Manami will show why she’s assimilated so effortlessly to club culture, whilst Maribou State are set to thrill with the first DJ set in their hometown in nearly 2 years.

Having played previous J2 events at Tobacco Dock, as well as the festival itself, crowd pleaser Nina Kraviz is invited back as a guest of honour, adding her energy to the landmark show. Half Baked Records’ Sam Bangura is a familiar face on the London circuit, whilst South African native SNO will be blending music from across her home continent. Promising to go against the grain, Polish underground radical VTSS completes the programme for the unmissable, bank holiday blowout.

Legendary nightclub, fabric london, has been revealed as the afterparty location, with full details announced at a later date.

Final final tear of tickets for each day will be available at midday on Tuesday 18th May. To access tickets, please sign up at: https://junction2.london/inner-city

Solardo present HIGHER Dubrovnik: Three day-and-night weekender in Croatia

Solardo will be joined by Andrea Oliva, Heidi, Nic Fanciulli, Danny Howard and more

Date: 23rd – 25th September

Pre-sale: https://bit.ly/33jA2hY | Artwork

Picture the scene: the sun is beating down, the Adriatic Sea is glistening, and behind you are historic streets and buildings you recognise from Game of Thrones. Welcome to HIGHER, a three-day and night Croatian extravaganza hosted by house heroes Solardo at Culture Club Revelin. Also supplying the sounds are superstar friends including Andrea Oliva, Danny Howard, Heidi, Max Chapman, Nic Fanciulli and wAFF, and that’s only phase one of the line-up. Sign up now for first access to tickets on May 13th at 10am.

The historic old town of Dubrovnik is an idyllic old-world setting right on Croatia’s south coast by the Adriatic Sea. It has gorgeous stone architecture, ancient clock towers and famous red tiled roofs. There’s a friendly, bustling atmosphere, winding streets filled with restaurants and bars, and plenty of sights made famous in Game of Thrones. By day, the sky is stunning azure blue, but as the sun sets it turns flame red and burnt orange. You will be right there dancing on the terrace of Culture Club Revelin as this stunning transition happens. Once it’s dark, the party heads inside what is one of DJ Mag’s Top 100 clubs in the world.

Alongside Solardo’s own Sola label, fellow hosts include SUAT, the Brit known for walking miles and miles as he live-streams his mixes from a DJ setup he carries on his front. Arielle Free’s new clubbing experience Free Your Mind also hosts, as do forward-thinking and eclectic Birmingham party crew WYLD, and Rituals LDN, a party known for bringing immersive and transformative production to a range of special spaces.

Musically the first wave includes a who’s who of contemporary talent from Radio 1 tastemaker Danny Howard to Ibiza legend Andrea Oliva via the jacking sounds of Heidi, melodic mastery of Nic Fanciulli and rolling techno of wAFF, with Sosa, Syreeta and Arielle Free also lining up.

There is much more to come for HIGHER 2021, but last year’s event sold out before it was postponed, so don’t sleep on securing tickets. Sign up now ahead of release on May 11th.

New London club Orange Yard announces re-opening line-ups

Tickets: https://ra.co/clubs/176870
Dates: May – October

Mike Dunn, Kevin de Vries, Brina Knauss, Chelina Manuhutu all scheduled

Nestled away in the backstreets of London’s bustling Soho district is Orange Yard. It is a personal and intimate club set to bring something utterly fresh and exciting to the capital with a next-level Funktion One system, specially designed sound treatment, and two atmospheric spaces – the outdoor terrace and a cosy inside dancefloor for 300 people. May 17th marks the much-anticipated re-launch with the likes of Mike Dunn, Viken Arman, Kevin de Vries, Briana Knauss and Chelina Manuhutu all supplying the sounds this season.

Orange Yard is all set to become the new home for proper house music in London. Bucking the trend for large super clubs, the compact and stylish venue offers something for those who prefer more snug club experiences. As well as an all-new terrace, it has a cosy 300 capacity club space that will cover all styles from deep to Chicago, organic to soulful.

The intimate inside club boasts a bespoke eight-piece Funktion One Soundsystem with full acoustic treatment that will provide unmatched sound quality across the full breadth of the room. The install was carried out by globally renowned audio experts Sound Services, who have worked with Funktion One on projects at the likes of Glastonbury and Red Bull Culture Clash as well as at sister venue E1. This means you can be sure of an unparalleled audio experience at each and every party.

Having undergone an extensive refurbishment since first launching in 2019, the tasteful contemporary venue is the perfect spot for post-work drinks on the vibey terrace, or for a proper get down in the club. It has futuristic neon lighting and wood-panelled walls that very much take you away from everyday life and into a cocoon of crystal clear, powerful sound.

Say the club, “We are over the moon to be reopening on May 17th for our series of socially distanced shows, featuring international as well as local London talent.  We have recently renovated our Funktion One system to provide unmatched sound clarity across the full breadth of the dance floor, making Orange Yard the perfect space to experience house music in the West End, with an unparalleled sound and musical experience.”

Chief amongst the new season of offerings are headline sets for in-house promotion Night Dreamers. The first comes from house royalty Mike Dunn on July 31st, the Chicago native behind many rough-edged but funky house classics and a thrilling DJ to boot. Frenchman Viken Arman is another house artist continually pushing boundaries and will do so on July 2nd. French house duo Amine Edge & DANCE.

Bring their hip hop slanted beats, and cutting-edge selector Kevin de Vries also plays for six hours in August and is sure to join the dots between house and techno past and present with his always hypnotic style. Slovenian talent Brina Knauss has achieved widespread notoriety and respect for her DJ skills in a short space of time and will show that when she plays on September 17th, and Dutch-born, Ibiza-based star Chelina Manuhutu will show why she is one house’s hottest properties with her powerful grooves on September 24th.

Between now and the end of summer, brands like Lost Paradiso, Frame, Eastern Grooves, La Dense, Way Out, Oscillate, Deep Into Soul, Care3, Disturbia, Concrete Music, Danza and more will also curate their own special events

The countdown is now on to the most exciting reopening on the London clubbing landscape.

Mixmag Presents Giorgia Angiuli live from Monopoli, Italy – May 13th 2021

“Giorgia Angiuli live from Monopoli, Italy | Turning The Dawn” (presented by Mixmag and produced by PhEST – international festival of photography and arts and the Municipality of Monopoli)

This drops just before her new collaboration with Lithuanian artist Gardens of God titled “Love The Noise”, out on her United imprint on May 14th.

Giorgia Angiuli is not only a classically trained musician, electronic producer and international live act, who has toured the world’s most prestigious music festivals, but a passionate advocate for her South Italian home town, Monopoli. To share its spectacular beauty with the wider world, on May 13th at 1900 CET, she will play a live set from this ‘little rock in the sea, at dawn.’ The whole region, Apulia, is famous for the intensity of the sun and ‘the stories written by the sea’ under its light.

Giorgia employs unique toy instruments and synthesizers to move fluidly between indie and melodic techno, as her voice creates a dreamy dimension. So there is the sound: the place: the time, dawn, symbol of hope: and the perfect partner, PhHEST, the international festival of photography and arts which since 2016 has enhanced Monopoli with fabulous colour.

PhHEST showcases photography, cinema, music, art, and multimedia collaborations from the Mediterranean, so this livestream also heralds their post-pandemic revival this summer (Aug.6th – Nov. 1st 2021).

Monopoli has become a tourist magnet, but to Giorgia, who grew up with her mother’s photos of her own 60’s summers in the city, this livestream is a tribute to her mother’s memory as well as a celebration of her town.
